By the way, just 16 months to go now :j:j:j........0

16 months will just fly by!
My brother's off (again hopefully - he needs a A in Maths) to Uni next year. He'll be 24, so one of the older ones. His younger friends truely have no idea of the actual worth of money. They all think that when they have a degree that they'll come out and get a job straight away at £20,000+ and had a bit of a shock when they saw what Uni digs are like. *shakes head*
I certainly don't remember thinking like that at all!
I think my brother will most likely take out a student loan as the 'don't pay it back until your earning x amount' appeals to him greatly. I'm sure my parents will help him out anyway they can but I think a proviso (right word?) will be that he has to get a part time job!
The world of loans confuse me greatly....Currently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck
Phase 1 - Emergency Fund - Complete :j
Phase 2 - £20,000 Mortgage Fund - Underway0 -
I dread mine getting to that age. I had to work and get the loan on top of a grant to survive. I ended up failing in my 2nd year and having to resit the year. I had no choice as my mum and dad were really struggling and didn't tell me for ages, and they were giving me £20 per week as it was they could afford (not really) and i was living on that in halls.
I ended up living in halls for 3 years as it was cheaper, and one of the years i was given a free room in return for working in the bar over the summer and other bars at other halls for their corporate events. Not that well paid, but kept me with my friends and not costing the parents anything.
I think that is why i am so paranoid now about paying the mortgage early so we have chance to save in case they want to go.
I read part of that thread but aggression for no reason gets right on my wick. Well done for being cool and stating your points calmly. I would have just ended up being really rude i think. I forget some boards have people who are not so nice and supportive.
Brilliant news that the end of the mortgage may be in sight so soon for you.0 -

Everyone is so nice on this board!
And just 16 more payments - I can hardly believe it:D0 -
And that is why i mainly hang around here, with mini forays into other threads that are equally supportive like frugal living and the grocery challenge.
I wish i had only 16 payments to go. More like 6 years. I would prefer it to be 3 but i am finding it hard now and can't imagine much getting easier in the next couple of years.0 -
16 more payments WOW!!! what are your big tips then?
Gosh I can remember scrimping things together when I was a student but was lucky as the loans were nothing like what theyre talking about now...still will be paying it off for a long while but not at huge interest rates so just see it as tax that has allowed me a way of doing what I want to do workwise! In fact my income as a student went up from about £30 a week for everything (as Id been living on benefits since leaving care at 16!) to over double that!! so for a good while I felt very rich...!and no I dont think kids should dictate how much they are given to go to uni! ...great if parents are able to help, but no real help in the long run if they arent learning the value of money! (cant believe your kids dont know value of money tho as Id imagine you have your head screwed on the right way with it to be almost MF! )

I should stop myself whinging as in 6 years i will be 37/38 and hopefully MF before the kids go to secondary school while having been a SAHM which most people would kill to do wouldn't they, so it is not like i have anything to moan about.
Although i think we will always want to do it better, faster, and still live wouldn't we.0
