What is not very clear on O2's web site, but has been confirmed to me today by a customer service representative, is that the newly launched £7.50 200MB/month O2 Web bolt-on will only work through O2 active. This effectively means you are locked in O2's WAP "walled garden" and will not be able to browse any web sites outside of O2 active. You will also not be able to use POP3 email.

I was using their old bolt-ons but now I am going to have to switch to some other PAYG deal as I do not fancy paying £3/MB, the only option I am left with on O2 after their October tariff revamp.

@itm2, jonnelson: As far as I understand, you can only use a 3 SIM in a 3G phone. You are technically able to use a 3 SIM in a 2G phone, but once 3 notice that you are doing so, they will warn you that this is a breach of their T&C and if your persist they will disable your SIM. Of course, the functionality on offer will also be limited. The information on the web as to whether GPRS will work on a 2G phone on 3 is divided -- some say yes, some say no. There also seems to be differences between PAYG and contract SIMs and even between different hardware.

As far as why they do not like you using a 2G phone with their SIMs, this is because by using a 2G phone, you are forcing traffic onto their roaming agreement with O2, for which they pay. If you are using a 3G phone, they cannot complain as you will be using 3's own network when possible and use the roaming only where 3 does not have coverage.

    Hope that makes sense.

They use Orange now for areas where there is no 3 signal available!
