I'd have let them past. Maybe they were driving like an idiot but on the other hand what of they had some sort of genuine emergency and had to get moving.

As above probably safest to stay out of the way whatever the reason was.

    +1

I'd have let him past. If he was angling to maneuvre to pass i'd had held my speed at 30MPH to let him do that.

He could have had a genuine reason OR (more likely) a nutter.

Either way, i'd rather not have them near me.

I find a quick tap of the brakes normally suffices in these situations.

Yes because being a !!!!! towards someone whos being a !!!!! is bound to end well.

Why? The "rabidly anti-MLM" brigade make a big thing about people doing the limit shouldn't be making those wishing to speed alter their course or direction (as it says you should avoid in the HC).

    But that cuts both ways:

The person wishing to speed in the 30 / overtake when (possibly) not safe shouldn't drive in a way to force the OP change his course or direction either.

That said, as earlier posters have suggested, allowing him to get in front is usually safer because it's not going to be you he hits once he's there.
If nothing else it would be good manners.

you should have slowed when the oncoming car appeared, to allow him to pull in front of you.
We've all been in those interesting situations.

If I brake to let him past, he might brake too so can't get in. You are both relying on the oncoming car (he won't like either of you).

If I accelerate, so might the idiot, you are both relying on the oncoming car (he won't like either of you)

The planets need to align for a safe outcome, fortunately the majority of drivers in this Country are reasonably good (when compared to the rather entertaining "Russian Drivers" on Youtube).

A bit like when you are trapped at a mini roundabout, who guns it first?

Why are UK drivers such self important morons?????

If someone wants to go faster than you and they're being aggressive about it, slow down let them pass!
Why do people have to take everything so personally? Why do people race for merge points? Why do they accelerate when being overtaken?
I swear half the accidents on our roads are ultimately caused by idiots deliberately winding up other people, whether it was 10 seconds ago or 2 miles back down the road.

    YOU ARE NOT THE POLICE!!
People go around trying to enforce the law on other drivers, except they're not enforcing the law, they're enforcing some made up version of it based upon what they think the law should be.
Example....... Having a go at bikers for "queue jumping", when it's perfectly legal to FILTER in the UK.

This passive-aggressive driving we have in the UK has got to stop, it's MUCH worse and MUCH more dangerous than someone doing 10-20mph over the limit.

Should I have changed my driving style to accommodate his desire to overtake?
Yes, be more considerate and let someone in a hurry overtake if you can. :A

    I've been Money Tipped!
I had to drive my daughters car to work recently as mine was in for servicing. As a new driver she has a black box device so I was driving well within the speed limits.

I was shocked by how many people thought it acceptable to sit on my rear bumper. I asked her about it when I got home and she says it's a daily occurrence.

Change your driving style for impatient d*cks who are obviously more important that you? Absolutely not.
I'm going to get a camera for her car that monitors front and rear so that when the inevitable idiot hits her from behind we have plenty of evidence.

  • Nothing wrong with your driving from i have read. I would rather drive sensibly and safely and not have to pay extra money out in speeding fines etc. If someone drives like that behind me i will drive even slower.

You seem to describe yourself in that last sentence as well, why not just let the impatient driver go and remove yourself from any problem or conflict that your stubborn pride is trying to attract to you?

    Highway Code Rule 168

Being overtaken. If a driver is trying to overtake you, maintain a steady course and speed, slowing down if necessary to let the vehicle pass. Never obstruct drivers who wish to pass. Speeding up or driving unpredictably while someone is overtaking you is dangerous. Drop back to maintain a two-second gap if someone overtakes and pulls into the gap in front of you.

(It doesn't sound like the other fellow exactly covered himself in glory either, but yes as a rule you should allow people to overtake, and if necessary slow down to let them do so safely.)
