I was surprised when I phoned up to check that the first standing order amount had arrived safely that it was credited on 1st November!

I paid in by a 'single payment' from Egg savings which coincidentally uses HSBC with sort code 40-something just like West Brom does) on 31st October (I know! you shouldn't do that just in case it arrives a month early too) reckoning that it would still arrive on 2nd and ahead of the weekend - and even if it arrived a day 'early' that would still be in November.

There must be a way of checking if this is a 'one off' like sending to another collection account held with HSBC from Egg (which I can do) but I wonder what experience anyone has had who uses HSBC to bank with? The theory is that payments from one bank to itself sometimes don't go into the full BACS cycle and simply stay 'within' the bank.

  • if anyone happens to know a quick & cheap way from London to one of their branches by train - lemme know, cheers!
  • You can get to Birmingham from Marylebone on Chiltern Trains for £15 return if you travel ultra off-peak. Not sure if it's really worth it especially if you need to go back a year later to close the account. Perhaps you can find some other reason for going to the West Midlands!

This account can be opened simply by phoning one of their branches and requesting details and a form in the post (that's how the majority of posters on this thread have opened theirs) There is absolutely no need to make a journey there . 'In branch' simply refers to the processing of the application by normal branch staff. It will be more straightforward for anyone who already holds a different account with West Bromwich as no additional ID would be required.

..and it's the same for most/all building societies. They are used to dealing with people by post and are pleased to do do (Compare this with how difficult it is to instruct the likes of Abbey 'National' to open or close an account without being asked to go into one of their branches - time/journey/costs etc)

Just to reiterate my post #45 above. I have just checked with W. Brom for all further payments (from Egg savings via BACS) and they all took one working day, not two.

This may be because Egg shares the same bank with the payee - HSBC - and is now sending its payments slightly differently

Or it could be nothing to do with Egg and is the same for all HSBC sources (such as personal account) of payment

So if paying in to your account from an HSBC source you might like to call W. Brom check on the dates they receive them - it might be a more general speeding up going on.
