No you don't have to be a member. Yes it is branch based, but I rang the branch and they posted forms out to me with Magic 8 on the application form and all I had to do was post off ID with it. No need to visit a branch, I was told.0

For those of you who have managed to apply by post, how far are you from their nearest branch?
I ask as I am quite a distance from my nearest branch (over 200 miles) and so wonder from how far away they are prepared to let people apply by post?0 -
30 miles.
You've got nothing to lose by ringing. I wouldn't even mention the distance, maybe they're not to hot on their geography!0 -
I live in Swindon , but they are still sending me the application forms and a standing order mandate . i was told you can vary your payments every month , didnt ask if you can make more then one payment a month though0

The leaflets from branches state at Condition 3:
"Investors can make additional investments at any time subject to condition 7" (which says you can put a minimum of £20 and a maximum of £1000 in any month).
So in short, yes you can make additional payments each month if you wish.

Passbook arrived today, with account opening dated 29th Sept, so technically I can put in another £1000 already for October. I had assumed that they wouldn't open it so fast, and that my cheque would have been my October payment.

It seems that it is possible to open this by post, but any indications about closing the account?0

Was looking for another regular saver, considering Halifax (currently 7%), but now this is favourite option - provided that I don't have to be a member already - does anyone know this?
Will be a couple of weeks before I can get to a branch to open one, but the £1000/month is much more favourable than many! Have done a few calculations, and this is possible - just funding from other high paying accounts and subsequently from matured regular savers.
Thanks for the info!
Made the effort - now have my account.
Cheers again for the info!!!

Opened by post and received our passbooks yesterday from a branch over 130 miles away!
The first branch I called (Swindon 115miles) refused to open the a/c by post, insisting it was via branch visit only. Had to call another 4 branches before one was willing to open it by post.0
