Adding a named driver - does that named driver has to inform his insurer?

  • So if he really has third party and you can be 100% certain he won't crash - then no.

If it would be useful for him drive it sometimes and if he did crash you'd need you car repaired as seems likely - then why not get him insured.

That sounds like it suits what you need anyway - when you stand back from trying to save money.

Also, if ever you are out together and don't fancy driving or as said at the start went away or further out for the day - then you can split the driving :-)
I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.

Thanks, I guess its not worth it then since I was just trying to add him to lower my insurance. He doesn't drive my car much.

Adding another mature driver like this is fine to do even if they never will drive the car.

You would need to ensure that you informed your insurer about any claims/losses/new convictions etc they have .

But it sounds worth it if your premium comes down £50 when you do so!

If your dad is a named driver on your policy, and you have an accident, then he wouldn't need to disclose the accident as he didn't have the accident, and it was your policy that paid out.

If he has an accident which is dealt with on your policy, then you both disclose the accident because he had the accident, but it was your insurers who paid out.

This is because the question asked if Have you had any accidents, losses or claims - and if it's the first scenario, then he wouldn't have.
