Adding a named driver - does that named driver has to inform his insurer?

Adding a named driver - does that named driver has to inform his insurer? Their insurer charges them for any changes and hence any savings by naming them in my insurance are offet by this administration charge.

And do both drivers have to pay the excess or just the main driver and not the named driver? For example, on a £400 excess, do we pay £400 or £800?

thanks

  • Not quite clear - do you mean you want say to add a friend to your car insurance so you can both drive your car on a holiday together for example?

Insurance goes down when u enter a more experienced driver as a named driver on your insurance. I want to add my father to mine. Just wanted to know if he has to inform his own insurer (for his car) as well?

Also, both pay excess on my car (me as the main driver as well as my father as a named driver)?

I would say no, he doesn't need to inform his insurer. Some companies ask if you have access to any other vehicles which the answer would now be yes, but he wouldn't have to tell them that until renewal. Even then it would unlikely make any sort of difference (might even bring it down?)

If he has a claim on your car though, then he needs to disclosed that on his own policy.

In terms of excess, you only pay one excess per claim. Just because there are 2 drivers doesn't mean you have to pay 2x excess.

So i will obviously lose No Claims as I am the main driver (which is fair) but he too will have a claim on his own insurance policy (meaning his future quotes will likely be higher)?

Well, I am only saving £50 by adding him so I guess its not worth it if TWO insurances are going to be affected and have "claims" on them both, meaning higher quotes in the future for both.
  • Ok so if the aim is to bring down your insurance not a need for your father to drive your car, then don't make it up for £50. If he could usefully drive it sometimes, then add him...

You would claim for your car once under your policy, whoever was driving when they crashed. That alone will pay and only that excess applicable.

You father's insurance will ask if he has access to drive any other cars and that may reduce his premium insurance (he can't drive both at once, so it reduces their risk).

And as said, he will have to tell them about any accidents or claims he has while driving your car. BUT he won't ever claim for you car on his insurance. And his insurance won't care about accidents you have in your car.

Safe driving after all that talk of accidents!

    :A

Thanks, I guess its not worth it then since I was just trying to add him to lower my insurance. He doesn't drive my car much.
  • Ok, but not much still means he needs to be insured to do so :-)

wont he have third party cover automaticlly on my car since he has fully-comp insurance with his own car?
  • Check his policy wording and any stipulations.

This used to be a common extra inclusion. But not all insurers do this - you have to add it mostly if available.

out of curiosity, if he is going to drive it for short hauls maybe 4 times a year, is it worth it to have him be a named driver on mine (even if his own insurance covers third party)?
