How did you pay for this order? It makes a difference to the strength of your bargaining position. Credit card, I hope.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Did the carpet fitters ever see the sample book? I doubt that it. So they just fit it as they get it. Start from the top and work down just using the roll of carpet as is?

The pile should run down the stairs, if it's laid the other way the carpet will wear out much quicker. Check the direction and if it's running up the stairs, go back to the shop, tell them it's fitted the wrong way and you want it put right.

  • Thank you for all your replies, I took photo's on my phone of the sample book and I also took a sample out of the book home but when they came to check my carpet they took the sample back to the shop because the fitter was saying it was a manufacturers fault at first and the manager said that the carpet was not suitable for the stairs my reply to him was why didn't you tell me or at least have a sign saying that it would run opposite way on my stairs, because you knew it was for the stairs, then he changed what he said to every carpet can be fittered anywhere. I feel gutted because I'm stuck with a carpet with flowers and leaves on what is upside down. At the minute I'm seeking help because I think it's wrong to fob people off and how many more people have they done it to, He has not phoned me back in the last couple of days and I don't think he will but I'm not letting it go.
  • No I didn't pay by credit card. They wanted all the money in full before the job and yes I know what a mug I am, But when all said and done with it being a well named company I just trusted them and never thought owt would go wrong because you expect them to tell you if somethings not suitable. They sent an inspector to come and check it and he even said they should have told me in the shop. But no matter what I still say everyone knows flowers grow upwards it's not rocket science

Can you post a link to the carpet?

I think it would be helpful for posters to see it, to envisage how bad it is (or not). May Dad has a flower carpet on his stairs it looks ok Ive never really taken much notice of the way the flowers run (will next time I go round there)

It seems a bad design of a carpet if it can only run one way as someone pointed out earlier a fitter will fit it as it comes off the roll.

The ground floor for most people is the main living area - what most of us do upstairs is sleep.

I bet looking at these flowers from the bottom of the stairs is as irritating as seeing mirror or pictures hanging askew.

That makes my hand itch wanting to put it straight so I completely understand the OP's frustration.

Perhaps it will soon be time to name and shame.

Is the shop part of a larger chain? An inspector from where? What should you have been told in the shop?

Contact the manufacturer, explain the problem and ask if the carpet is suitable for where it has been fitted and if it has been fitted correctly.

You may have a case for misselling. Try asking here.

    I feel your pain.

A friend wallpapered a nursery and hung the paper with the "baby holding balloons" motif upside down. His wife reminds him constantly how stupid it looks!

My friends did their bathroom with rainbows the wrong way up. When somebody pointed it out they had to take it down and redo it as it became annoying, they didn't notice it themselves.
