What smart TV?

I plan to get new TV soon, and am thinking about a smart one.

I have always had Sony Bravias in the past, but am not sure what the smart ones are like.

I'm thinking og about 50 inches, and it will be on the wall.

Any suggestions, or features to look for?

  • I have samsungs but budget not specified so can't suggest one, my samsungs are <4 years old and their smart functions are still updated. However a cheaper option is to go for a good quality display and an external box, eg fire stick, now tv, apple tv(spits),kodi box etc

I'll second the external box option. We never use the built in smart functions of the TV as everything is handled by the PVR Chromecast and PS3. As mentioned above there are other options. The point being that the function within the TV has, more or less, become redundant, I can't remember the last time it was used.
In fact the TV is only used as a glorified monitor with everything else handled externally.

Thanks for good advice you two.

I have a theory that £750 to £850 seems to be most common budget.

Any tv with a Firestick. Load Mobdro and Kodi (takes about ten minutes) and you'll now have everything you'll ever need.

I'll third the external box option. The tv software will become outdated, most likely not be upgreadable even though a 5 year upgrade plan is advertised, may not play new services or like certain web pages or services. OK, does not look great having loads of boxes attached, or dangling ;) but a dumb tv and preferably a programmable smart box is the way

have never understood the need for a smart tv when most people have boxes attached to tv already that make the tv smart. most people i speak to don't use the smart features on their 'smart' tv anyway

dumb tv +pvr +raspberry pi = a very smart tv

well i have a LG smart TV with built in freesat, no need for any other box for my needs, plug in a USB memory stick, which is powered by the USB to record the TV when needed and no need for any other other boxes, power drains or remotes.

one remote to control them all, and i shall call it Excalibur!!!

but seriously to me, i got LG because of the NowTV app along with netflix, amazon and crunchyroll, personally dont need anything else and looks much better without all the extra boxes and remotes everywhere, also as i have a LG mobile phone, i have had no problems syncing my phone to my tv and can fully control my tv from my phone, so i dont even need a remote.

ok so i have only had it 2 years, so not really got to the built in obsolescence that people say about with no updates, but so far no problems and love not having to mess about with lots of devices

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
  • Within 2 years of owning my Samsung smart TV, they withdrew the Amazon video app. I will never be buying a smart TV again - and will just stick with 'Good TV' + firestick/something else.
  • what is this please? ive heard about it but unsure.

I bought a LG oled TV last week, so far very pleased with it. The built in BBC iPlayer and the ability to record direct to USB without needing extra boxes is a plus.
