Not So "free" Mobile Web Service

  • Going on standard o2 pricing *which I know is different to Vodafone* but at, say, £6 per mb, to have a bill of £500 for browsing, you would need to have used around 83mb - more if Vodafone's roaming costs are cheaper - but thats a hell of a lot of browsing!

Easy to do if you think it's free ;) Me playing around with web'n'walk on my shiny new phone I can easily get close to the ~40Mb/day 'fair usage limit'. But it is 3G so you have to adjust your perception of data usage vs. time.

would they have to prove what was recorded, if indeed it was??

Doubtless no anti-voda recording will exist by the time the matter ended up in court.

The minimum charge for using the internet in Spain is £5/day, and can go to £10.28 per mb.

The free trial web access package is their £7.50/month add on (and obviously cannot be used abroad, where using your uk mobile is known to be considerably more expensive).

    not if they have mis-sold.

Misselling a free gift will be hard to prove (and a trading standards matter, rather than a money claim issue).

gordy1976 may like to get some trading standards advice before embarking on any fight, as the 50% discount offer might be jeopardised.
  • I understand what some of you are saying about cost of using mobile phones abroad being considerably more expensive but In all honest is it really my responsibility to find that information out on a service which was sold to me? Also I appreciate that you say it was a free gift but we all know that isn;t really the case and indeed its a hook to try to get you to keep and pay for it.
Thanks for all your help and advise though guys. I will get in touch with consumer advise and see what they say.

YES of course it is, why did you expect it would be free from abroad when calls etc are much dearer anyway? Do you think it uses less airtime than talking or something?

  • I can see where the OP is coming from but it is also common knowledge that where mobiles are concerned, NOTHING is free whilst roaming. If you knew voice calls are extortionate in Spain it's just irresponsible not to check your deal for internet too.

However what would work in his favour is if he said on the phone to Vodafone sales that he would be using his 'free internet' whilst in Spain, because logically at this point they should have told him that it is not.
