Not So "free" Mobile Web Service
I hope someone can advise me on this matter.
I recently called Vodafone to pay my bill and spoke to a very helpful and friendly girl who I chatted with about my upcoming holiday to Spain, she duly took my payment and at the end of the call she advised me that Vodafone currently had a 3 months free insurance promotion which covered me if my phone was lost or stolen including whilst abroad. I duly accepted the offer and she then went on to advise me that they also had a promotion offering 1 months free web access. I commented that this would be handy as if i needed to move money about whilst abroad then I could do so, she also said if I did want to cancel the service before it became chargable that all I needed to do was call in a months time and cancel it.
I went on holiday, had a great time, used my "free" web access whils abroad to book a rental car and check my bank, etc.
Upon my return I got a call from Vodafone to say that my final bill for that month had yet to be calculated but was currently £580  You can imagine my dispair. I asked why this was and was told that it was for mobile web browsing whilst abroad. I spoke to an advisor and complained that I was sold this as a free service. The advisor told me that they wcould send my bill for re-calculation and call me once this had been done.
The day of my callback had passed and I got in to find a Vodafone bill on my doorstep. When I opened it it said I owe £718  I was immediately on the phone to Vodafone to ask why and how this could have happened as £500 of the bill was for mobile browsing. I never asked for this service and at no point was told that if I used it abroad which I told the girl I may do, that it would cost me. Obviously if I would have known exatly how much it was going to cost, i would never have accepted it in the first place. I was told by Vodafone that it was my fault as I should have checked out the terms even though no terms or correspondence were sent or given to me. They did however offer to knock £100 off the bill as a good will gesture. I said no and I would be contacting Oftel to log a complaint. About an hour later a team leader called me back and basically continued to tell me that it was my own fault even though I said I had been mis-sold the service and the best he could do was half the bill for the browsing and knock £250 off, still requiring me to Pay £460 in total.
Has anybody else experienced this or had a similar problem. I am prepared to fight them all the way on this but want to make sure that I am not fighting a losing battle.
Thanks,
Gordy1976

You're lucky you got through to a "team leader". It took me two months and they were completely useless albeit on four other complaints! When I joined them they were fantastic; a few months later they become the pits.0

You were clearly misled by Vodafone and I hope that you get your charges fully refunded, so do keep trying. However I am surprised that you believed what you were told by the Vodafone Muppet, as using data or indeed any services while abroad is not cheap due to roaming charges. Even in this country data is the latest mobile industry rip-off. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Just my 2p ...
No offense intended but IMO any expectation of free data roaming international service is likely to be met with derision by the regulators.
If pressed you would have to acknowledge being aware that voice and sms service when abroad costs above and beyond the usual domestic rate, occasionally at ridiculously high levels, and never inclusive or free within one's package. Based upon that admission, they would probably question why you expected data usage when abroad to not attract similar high markup and/or costs not normally charged for the same usage on the domestic network.Used my MB profits to trade London for Cyprus ...0 -
Have to agree with chachi I'm afraid - you have to ask the questions explicitly rather than assume or infer. The thanks button is here to the right. If you find a post saves you money, gives you useful information, or you agree with it, take a second to thank the poster!

Might be worth asking for transcript of the conversation if possible if you feel you really have been mis-sold. If available all will be revealed.

Certainly not if it's in their favour, but do they have to if say they got sued?? Seems strange they are trying to make some sort of offer though.

Who is going to sue them - and what for? They are the creditor in this matter.
If any sueing is done over this it will be gordy1976 getting sued (as he is the one who owes the money).
If then gordy1976 wants to defend the summons it will up to him to prove they told him he could access the web without charge whilst abroad. That will be well nigh impossible.
The 50% off looks a good offer.0 -

And would they have to prove what was recorded, if indeed it was??
