program called freia and a data cable, unless its version 16 or above, in which case you need to make a test point, then unlock using freia. Test point is difficult to do, and I'd recommend getting it done at a phone shop, or if its on virgin, loading it with £30 credit, and asking them to unlock if for free.

I'm going to move this thread over to the Mobile Phone board, as there are lots of users over there with knowledge about free phone unlocking.

most new sl55s will be v16
you can check by pressing *#06# and then looking at the info.
just needs a resistor soldering between the pcb chassis and the pcb test point, then use the free s/w with the correct cable
its a bit fiddily to do and can take a few goes to get it working
the s/w is free and i can send you a pic of the test point if you pm me your email addy
older s/w versions unlock with the free sw/ easily without the messing about
