I do 1/3 cup per person. Same as for rice
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Thank you for the advice re couscous. I'm planning on playing around with some recipes this weekend for lunch next week - I'm out at events for two days, but need lunch for the next three.

Today was payday - normal shopping day and also a team lunch day.

Lesson 1 - (at first blush) shopping as vegi is cheaper than shopping as omni.

£8 odd netted me the following (from coop, and I was lucky enough to be there at reduction time):

    image1.jpg

    4 large flat mushrooms
    1 tub mushrooms
    Bag'O spring greens
Carrot sticks - yes bag of carrots cheaper but then they go off
    2 packs preped veg
    Noodles
BN Noodles - great in omelettes
    Bread and
Bananaramas - not so great in omelettes

For the rest of this week I was thinking mushroom 'burgers' with wedges and beans, stir fry with noodles, and 2 omelettes - mushroom and BN - with wedges.

Cheese butties/toasties with soup and egg on toast for the bread.

Other than a stir fry - not sure what to do with the spring greens?
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

    DAY 1/44

Today was a good day (so far at least).

Happy St Davids day to all.

Had blueberry pancakes for breakfast - with batter left in the fridge meaning they could also be for dinner...:p

Team Lunch out with the new boss - supposed to be a monthly thing, and he's a vegi - so very supportive so far.

Had falafels and decided to be extra healthy so had them on a plate with no pita and salad.

There was an amazing aubergine garlic 'thing' that I thought was hummus - something like baba ganesh - I must eat more of this divine substance in the future. Garlicy heaven.

    [ETA - this stuff - http://www.food.com/recipe/baba-ganoush-the-best-in-the-world-67570]

Feel good right now. Not over stuffed and not as sleepy as normal after lunch. Not sure if that's being out of the office mid day, lack of bread products, or the lack of meat. We'll see if I feel full until dinner (whatever that's gonna be).

Also went in to weigh this morning and got a breakdown of my fat/muscle percentages (fancy machine in occupational health) so it'll be interesting to see if there's any shift there after 6 weeks...

    Gratuitous plate shot:

    image2.jpg

How's everyone else doing first day?

Anyone wake up this morning and completely forget:cool:

Ooh yum! That looks great. I have an aubergine in next week's shopping delivery so much garlic will clearly need to be applied. ;)

So far so good today. Lunch was just protein and veggies (basically a mushroom stroganoff), and I ended up skipping breakfast due to something needing to be sorted out urgently. Dinner is sushi, so within my carbs framework, and there will be a load of salad going on.

NewShadow - as regards how I'm doing so far.
I'm going to do my best to give up being judgemental and critical and hope to carry on when Lent is over.
Food wise I'm going to stop cheating myself and the family by hitting the biscuits and cheese every time MrC takes the dog out for a walk. I'd stopped snacking for the past 16 months and then suddenly started again. Lent will be a good time to stop.

Hmmm. Success on the food front. But that's because I've done all three dog walks so far today so that doesn't really count.
The first is being very problematic. Mentally I've been very judgemental and critical today of:
    1. A very rude woman who pushed in front of me and stood on my foot at a bus stop;
    2. A woman swearing at her two (ish) year old on the bus. Lovely little girl who just wanted mum to tear her eyes from her mobile for a few seconds and interact with her;
    3. MrC for avoiding dog walking duties three days in a row :)
Apart from in the case of the first woman though I've kept my
thoughts to myself - I don't mind walking the ginger ninja anyway and it will help my waistline - but I am a little startled by how judgemental I am mentally, justifiable or not.

This makes me so cross. Some people should go on a technology fast for Lent.

I am managing okay, so far. I am fasting today which I find quite hard (it's not a hard fast at all, it's just me being silly). There have been some family stresses today with people on the phone in a state and I find that hard to cope with without a biscuit! But if I've managed today I should manage the rest of it. I think it will be good for me to recognise the times I reach for crisps when a few deep breaths might suffice.

Hmm... not sure if you want suggestions - but new habits take time to bed in so perhaps you're not being fair to yourself expecting to go 'cold turkey'.

Maybe acknowledging and recognising when you're feeling judgemental towards someone is a good first step? And you could keep a tally of negative to positive daily - aiming for a % increase over Lent.

Or it might help to try - rather than not be judgemental at all - whenever you recognise you've been judgemental immediately think of either something positive about the person or a time when you've acted in the same way? To connect seeing both positive and negative rather than focusing on the negative judgement.

I've got it relatively easy in that I'm replacing one behaviour for another - I'm not sure how well I'd do if I could only focus on the thing I'm not supposed to do...

I did that for a month when I turned 30.

First week was honestly difficult - wanting to take a quick picture and send it to someone, or google something that was bugging me, or check the weather/bus routes/cooking times.

Then I adjusted and - while I won't say it was amazing - I didn't miss it anymore. Just got on with stuff.
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Thanks NewShadow I'm very aware that recently I've become far more negative about things generally so I'm going to turn it around, and instead of avoiding being judgemental look for the positives in situations - health benefits of walking dog for instance. Some situations, realistically, are going to be harder than others to be positive about so I'm not going to dwell on them, just put themehind me and move on.

    Day 1 of 44:
Yesterday I had tarka dal, rice, carrots and cabbage for dinner, for lunch I had soup you can stand up in with lot of pearl barley, potatoes and veg.
I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.
