Tonik Energy

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering whether this energy company was any good - checked on the cheap energy club and said i could save £148 pound a year?

I have been looking to change as npower have notified me of that price increase in March. I am on their standard tariff so I will be affected, hence why I was looking into cheaper deals.

If anyone has any tips or if they know if Tonik is any good then please let me know!

I am based in merseyside with an L8 postcode. What I get confused with is is the standing charges. They are more than what I will pay even after the price increase at npower but yet I will still save £148 potentially??

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to MSE :hello:

You already appear to have asked this question in a thread that already has lots of discussion about this company
    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5557042

There is also a feedback thread on this company here:

  • Yeah - after I posted my initial one, I thought it was probably better to make a new thread on it.

People had said they had changed over to that company but hadn't said much of their experience to date!

Thanks for the link though - lots more info there!

Forget about standing charges and unit costs-what matters is the total annual cost, which any comp site will give you in seconds.
If you do nothing else, then get off Standard tariff, it's the most expensive.

The biggest flaw in the MSE feedback process is that consumers are only allowed to post feedback on one company. Why does this matter? In truth, it is often the case that consumers can have a trouble-free switch along with excellent billing only to find that, when they tried to switch away, the supplier blocked the transfer because of an alleged debt and, after they had switched, there were long delays getting a Final Bill and credit re-paid.

Caveat Emptor - treat all feedback with caution. I look for objective data: for example, complaints/100k customers as recorded by Citizens Advice and recurring themes on feedback sites. Have a look at Trustpilot/Iresa and you will see what I mean, and while you are at it have a look at Tonik's feedback.
  • I have been with them since last May. I have found them very good and received excellent customer service with a query.
  • Switched to Tonik recently from first utility. They were cheapest. The switch was easy and painless. Like their website but wish they had an app for meter readings to.
  • I am in the process of leaving them. I beleive their claim of 100% renewable is more based on them investing in 3rd world countries rather than our own energy system like ecotricity does. I am on my way back to ecotricity after a stupid argument with them. I am having solar and battery storage installed and problems arose that they were most unhelpful with and now based on the advice of their meter changing subcontractor are trying to tell me that my battery system that they know nothing about is against regulations. I oricinally moved to them because i bought what turned out to be a short lived 2 week disaster with poworvault who wanted me to move to tonik as part of a trial that got me a discount. The idea was that they would install a smart meter and monitor my usage to collect statistics on what happens when a customor has a battery system installed. Except over a year later they still cannot connect to my meter. They are a joke. They claim on the authority of their subcontractors advice that from looking at a photo of the metor taken from 1m away they can identify that the meter seals that are probably represented by 10 pixels are not the originals.

These people are useless, they have no clue what they are talking about yet are quike to make very serious accusations. If you plan on having any solar or battery systems avoid them as they can't deal with it and make life hard.

I was with Tonik for a year (they have a refer a friend scheme too where each gets £20, so if you haven't joined check the referrals board - it netted me over £100, but I've removed my referral link as I've now moved away).

When I joined they were the cheapest fix (bulb a variable rate was almost as cheap at the time but I prefer a fix rate as do not want to be checking/switching every few months). I've had no trouble with them - called their customer services 3 times over the year, calls answered quickly and dealt with professionally. First call was during the switch over to confirm some dates, can't remember why I called the second time, think it was about my DD as I was using a lot over winter, and the third time was when I got my final bill - they had used a different gas reading to what I had given my new supplier, they informed me its what my new supplier had given and I should contact my new supplier to confirm they won't start charging me until my meter reaches it (they were very open about the reason why - suppliers sometimes use "DC" readings of estimated use). I contacted my new supplier who confirmed they had given the reading and would not charge me until my meter passed the given reading - which was fine as it meant I was paying at the old cheaper rate for it. My refund was automatically processed for my next DD date, which was a couple of weeks after the final bill.

The only reason I moved was because my fix ended and the renewal quote was a £20pm increase - in the comparison sites at my renewal time they were not even in the lowest 5! I'm not sure how green they are (they have different tariffs and I did not go on the greenest 100% renewable as it cost more), but if you are concerned about customer support etc, I found them very good (if you look at other reviews there has been people who have posted about having problems with cust support, though IIRC it was someone who switched but cancelled within the switch as changed their mind). The online billing can look a bit confusing as they list DD and statement bill dates that at first glance seems inconsistent, but I plugged all the figures into Excel and found it all correct.

If the price is good for you, then go for it. I did like that they also pay 3% interest on any credit, so over the summer when you are using a lot less energy at least you are being paid for surplus in there.

Hope that helps - read the threads linked in an above post.
