O/S Daily Sunday 19 February 2017

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Morning everyone

Hugs to those that want/need them x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

Light here, drying up underfoot still, but cloudy, windy and mild here.

Dinner last night was egg, bacon, sausage, black pudding, hash browns, mushrooms, beans and toast/bread and butter. Lunch today is going to be roast chicken, roasties, mash, carrots, pan fried cabbage with bacon, broc, yorkshires and gravy.

We went to visit the oldies yesterday after we'd got back from work yesterday lunch time and had a quick lunch. My parents weren't at home, so we visited DH's parents, then rang to my parents to see if they'd got home, still weren't there, so came home, rang later to then be told they had been out with my sis and her family as they were visiting from Cornwall - they've been here for the half term - and, of course, until yesterday I didn't know they were here, dad even phoned me in the week about something else and never mentioned it - just shoves it in my face even more that I get left out. I could go over there to visit this morning, but just can't really be bothered, I know that's a bit childish, but it's likely they are going home today anyway so they will be leaving this morning, or may have left already by the time we get there.

Moving on - today we need to continue with the declutter - there's stuff all over the dining room table, so the declutter will continue.

Keep safe and well x

  • Morning!

Thank you for starting us off nmlc.

I'm on my second cup of tea, enjoying the peace apart from the washing machine chugging along. I've just emptied the last of a big bottle of laundry liquid and I have a cardigan to wash by hand so will rinse the bottle for that, there is going to be enough clinging to the sides.

I don't have particular plans for today other than getting laundry up to date - two loads yesterday and two today. Most of yesterday's is dry, just needs a little more airing, the weather is warmer now.

Dinner will be roast chicken with roasties, bread sauce, lots of vegetables and probably Yorkshires, and although I might prep the veg this morning, we don't eat at lunchtime other than a sandwich or piece of toast which is a DIY effort.

I'm going to carry on enjoying the peace and quiet for a while now, and OH will go and collect the Sunday paper when he gets up. Do other people here enjoy a newspaper? I know everything is available on the net and I really don't get time for the paper on working days but I do like it on Saturdays and Sundays. I especially like the big crossword in the Times on Saturday but almost never finish it and yesterday managed only 4 clues.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back

Good morning, thanks to nmlc for starting the thread and hugs to those that need or want them.
Another early rise thanks to pooch he seems to have an inbuilt alarm clock:)
Had a rather unsteady day yesterday so didn't air my wheels or get the admin done- hopefully I'll manage these today.
Lovely dinner last night of slow cooked hoisin pork ribs, veggies and noodles and now I've sussed the dish in the slowcooker so I can make one portion I'm making a beef olive today and will also make some root veg mash to go with it. Meal plan for the week will be a bit hit or miss as my son is here for a couple of nights then off on a stag weekend so will see what he fancies having.
Despite being a great fan of "shake and fold" there is a small pile of ironing beginning to develop which I really should think about tackling before it breeds
Hope everyone has a good day x
  • Morning folks and thanks NMLC. It goes without saying I suppose that I had another rubbish night! Another mild start here but the forecast is for a cloudy day.

No fixed plans and nothing exciting in store! May or may not pop down to the expensive home furnishing store to look at pictures after lunch. No intention of spending a fortune on one when it's for the bedroom though!

I left a minted lamb casserole in the sc overnight for Mr TA's lunch. I never eat lamb but Mr TA loves it, so I like to give him a treat now and then! I shall do a bit of chicken for myself with some cauliflower cheese and assorted veg. The diet is a bit hit and miss I'm afraid as I can't seem to summon up much willpower.

Have a nice day folks and (HUGS) to the poorlies, sad and worried who want one. Take care all whatever you are up to xx

  • Ironing does breed caronc, I'm devoted to shake and fold but still end up with some items that need to get ironed. I'm ignoring them today though.

:D suspect I may end up ignoring it as well........:o
  • Morning all
Thanks for the thread nmlc.. hugs to all those in need.
The fish have been fed and my L&M has a cuppa, it seems a bit milder today but still damp.
I'm getting rid of my big steam generator iron along with lots of other stuff, but I'm wondering whether to buy a travel iron for my patchwork.
I've started a crochet unicorn for DGD and a chunky baby blanket for a work colleague, it keeps my hands from seizing up.
    Have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester

    Good morning everyone :hello:

It's a little bit grey outside but we have had some lovely sunshine over the past few days so I am crossing my fingers that it cheers up later.

I actually had more than 3 hours sleep so I feel like a new woman :D. I've still got the last remnants of my cold but I feel so much better today. Poor DD16 has gone down with it and she looks really poorly. I am making her rest and drink lots, the resting is fine...she's a teenager after all but I can't get her to drink much.

We are having roast chicken for lunch today, I will just have some with some vegetables as I am low carbing at the moment. I made up an 'interesting' dish last night with courgettes, spring greens, tuna, cheese cream and garlic. It was edible helped by the fact I don't have much sense of taste at the moment but I won't be rushing off to make it again :o.

I managed to get 5 loads of washing done yesterday including our bedding so it was lovely to crawl into bed last night. I still have to clean our bedroom as it is very dusty and the carpet desperately needs hoovering. I will see if one of the girls will give me a hand later.

Well, that's all from me for now, hope you all have a great day, take care xx

    Morning everyone.

Yesterday evening turned out a tad worrying. A neighbour called in unexpectedly to show me his new puppy, along with the puppy's dad which he's owned from birth. The dogs are sprocker spaniels. Anyway, the four month old pup dashed into the living room and literally shot round every part of it in under 30 seconds, bouncing and running everywhere. As I got my neighbour his dram I noticed that a blue packet of mouse bait was gone! It'd been there for about 18 months, untouched, and no other dog had gone near it, and there has been five different digs here all more than once.

Slight panic took over and there was no relaxing chat. I gave my neighbour the box and he went home to phone the vet. Turns out all is OK because the pup would need to ingest a whole lot more to cause any damage to himself. Still, the thought of it kept me tossing and worrying all night.

The only plan for this damp day is having Sunday lunch up the hill with friends. It's a winding potholed single track up to their place but the view over The Paps of Jura is worth it. And I'm not cooking!

Want to add that I gave up all ironing many many years ago. Nothing of mine gets / needs ironing. Life is far too short for all that stuff.

    Happy Sunday everyone.

Morning everyone, thanks for the thread nmlc and hug for the family hassle.

Early start this morning as Tilly dog decided she needed the loo early doors, let them both out and noticed a dead rabbit in the garden :( couldn't find any marks on it and no sign of mini so no idea what happened there.
It seems really mild out there if a bit cloudy, hopefully we will see the sun later as we intend to spend time in the garden.
We have HM southern fried chicken for lunch, will do DOH pot wedges to go with and we can both have veg.
Thoroughly enjoyed the footie yesterday, our team came back from 0-2 down so very exciting, will have to make sure go again and lovely spending time with my bro.
Phew over the pup Gers Tilly is a working cocker but spaniels are a bundle of energy for sure and are into things before you know it.

Have a good day everyone, take care folks x

    Good morning,

Thanks Nmlc for starting the thread.

Hugs to all who need them and well wishes to the poorlies.

Dumpling I hope your DD gets well soon.

Re ironing, I used to iron a lot, it used to be very relaxing, alone in my kitchen, with the stereo on and a full pot of tea, almost a zen meditation. Then after years I just got fed up. Not only of ironing but of all the housework, childcare, the lot. It seems to have come along with the approach to the menopause, this feeling, like Gers says, life's too short, I have done enough, can't be bothered anymore.

I started giving up things that did not work for me. I remember turning 50 and saying clearly to DH that I would no longer work full time, that we would have to make do with less (by then I was already a skilled OSer) and that it was that or divorce! He was ok with my going part time LOL.

When I was full time in work I always had a cleaner but when I reduced my hours I did most of the work, including ironing, myself, with some help from DH and the kids.

A few years later DH got a much better job that really changed the financial situation for the better and at the same time I started getting more aches and pains and we reintroduced a cleaner for the things I struggle to do. We still have her once a week, 2 hours is all we need now that the kids have left home and DH is retired, we do the day to day light housework and finally my house no longer looks like a bomb site because we manage to keep it fairly neat from a week to the other.

This lady also irons the few shirts for DH, no longer a shirt a day like it used to be when he was working!

To be fair, DH also ironed his own shirts when I couldn't or was too busy.

But I would never go back to ironing stuff regularly! Or do all the housework myself! I would rather go without a treat, and so glad I am giving someone else who needs it a bit of work.

DD stayed overnight last night so I am going to get up soon and make breakfast. Am really aching from my hip arthritis, it kept waking me up, so am delaying the getting up as much as I can. DH went to the allotment to pick up a tarp we need in the back garden, but in 5 minutes I need to go and start cooking (eggs and mushrooms with mozzarella, on toasted muffins).

Church after breakfast and then we have been invited out for lunch by DH's relatives who are visiting London from up north. I have booked Loch Fyne in Covent Garden, they are paying but I am helping by using the gourmet card, we will get 25% off with it.

I doubt we will need much dinner after lunch out, probably a light soup, or cheese and salad, then we meet at our vicar's tonight for our fortnightly discussion group, it is always very interesting and quite the social occasion, with cheese and wine and a lively debate.

    Have a good Sunday.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
