  • Noise on the line can occur at any point between the exchange and your modem/router.
Read this http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/lowSNR.htm but be aware that some poor snr margins are due to things outwith anyones control so the best you can do is make sure your own internal wiring is up to scratch.
The way these snr margins are supposed to work is they should increase in 3db increments if you experience problems on your line, 6 db being the lowest they can be set at. Sometimes though if the margin has been set manually by BT to cure speed/connections the margins stick at that point.
If you were on a LLU service then your ISP can set the snr margin themselves (also IP profiles don't apply and the bt speed test won't work), but as far as I can tell from your posts so far they haven't put you on that, have they?

  • Think we've covered everything (did you ever get the bt test to work?), maybe just a temporary thing on your line causing poor snr margins combined with AOLs throttling policy. I know my line suffered with poor margins for a while but miraculously recovered and is rock solid now.
If you really want more punishment you could look into your mtu and rwin values http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/tweak2.htm
At least you've learned a bit about how broadband works and how it's a miracle anyone gets close to 8 megs.
