I find that this website http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/ and my store cupboard/freezer enable me to create many delicious and nutritious meals from *nothing in the house that I can make a meal out of*

  • Hello
Any ideas on what to put in a storecupboard and
How much is it going to cost to stock it?

    Thanks in advance:)

Really depends what you want and what your family eat! It won't feel expensive if you do it gradually, ie when flour or tins are on offer buy lots.
I'd start with rice, lentil/beans, flour, tinned toms and if you're a milk drinker powdered milk.

Think of a few of your favourite family meals and what goes into them and start by stocking up on those things. So if it's chilli make sure you have rice, tinned toms and red kidney beans or spag bol needs tinned toms, pasta, dried herbs etc.

Another place to start cheaply, if you are ok with short or past best before dated foods, would be approved foods or big brands for less together with any other shops or online places like this and see what is offer and base our initial store cupboard purchases around what's available from there at the moment - just remember though - however big a bargain something is if it's not what you like to eat it will just sit at the back of your cupboard forever!!!!

If you have an Asian supermarket near you they are fab places to stock up on dried beans, lentils, flour and oil as well as spices. I get a blended oive oil which I use as my base cooking oil for £5.99 for 5 litres and just decant it into a small bottle for using.

do you mean an emergency store cupboard or just stocking you cupboards from new?

if you search the forum for store cupboard you'll find loads of threads that might help, I posted my normal stock cupboard list on one of them but can never find it :)

Here's the storecupboard thread: Storecupboard Essentials

As others have said, it depends on what you eat/make. As an example, thriftlady has an excellent list on that thread but there's some things on there I either don't use at all or at least regularly enough to always keep it on hand. So I'd suggest using it as inspiration, take off things you're not going to use and add on any family favourites.

As for cost - it is going to depend on how big your list ends up being. But the great thing about these essentials is that for the most part, there's very little difference between value and branded goods. So a basic cupboard can be stocked quite cheaply!

  • Hi,
Husband still not working after 2yrs now......things are pretty desperate and one of the things getting me down is food!....Im sick of having nothing (or so it seems!) to eat in the freezer or cupboard so I want to start planning meals ....yes...I KNOW all you smart people out there already do this so I'm wondering if you can help with any 'cheap meals to make' sites or receipes...just seem stuck for ideas.... but also what would you say are the main things to keep stocked up on in my cupboard to make meals? Any help would be gratefully received!
    Thanks :)
