For me, I always make sure I've got:
Tins:
Tuna
Sweetcorn
Passata/chopped tomatoes
Beans
Other:
Big Bag Pasta
Few jars pasta sauce for emergencies
SR Flour
Plain Flour
Big Box Eggs
Big Bag Potatoes
UHT milk
Freezer:
Mince (either beef or lamb, I like to have a bag which can be cooked from frozen)
Chicken Thighs and Drumsticks
Sausages (again ones bought already frozen so I don't have to remember to defrost)
Mixed Veg
Fish
Emergency Loaf
If I always have this stuff in if we are short at the end of the month (like now!) or if I can't get out shopping I know there are a few meals I can make..0 -
Ladies and gents,
In order for us to become more frugal and more ol' styleeeee, please could you share with me some of your essential store cupboard items?
Or pass on any tips for must have items?
Home cooking is my new focus for the year, well, for the rest of my life actually.
Thank you kindly in advance.** Proud to be dealing with my debts **LBM - Jan 2009 _pale_ : £24,802.21 :eek:February 2010 :silenced: : £18,078.47 (not including OD)July 2010= £16,819.34 (not including OD)

Oooops, LondonDreamer beat me to it.
Golden Goose, you'll find some very comprehensive lists on that thread so I'll add your thread to it later to keep the suggestions together.

I'm sure the attached thread is pretty thorough, but my essentials would be -
tinned tomatoes (use for pasta sauce, soup, stews, cottage pie, chilli, everything really)
Cartons of passata, perfect for using with tinned toms makin pasta sauce
herbs and spices (i have a mixed italian that I use constantly, as well as rosemary, thyme, sage, bay leaves, paprika, star anise.. and a few others)
Risotto rice
Pasta
Plain and self raising flour (ive started making my own pastry, bread, cakes etc)
Eggs
Yeast (for breadmaking)
Frozen veg - I have peas, sweetcorn, baby broadbeans and runner beans. Perfect for throwing into soups, risotto etc
Stock cubes, different flavours
I stock up on canned beans like kidney beans (for chilli) chickpeas, green lentils, butter beans, perfect for throwing into soups etc
I always have onions, carrots, celery, tomatoes, potatoes. Plus meat in the freezer, just need to leave out and defrost the night before.
I also always try and have chorizo in the fridge, again, it's one of those staple things that I use weekly. Chopped up into soup, into pasta sauce etc.
And cheese, always keep cheese in the fridge. You can melt cheese onto most things to give it a lovely lift :-)
xCan't think of anything smart to put here...0 -
my list is probs on there already but recently I have started buying passatta as well as tinned toms. I prefer the texture in somethings and at 29p for 500g its less £ for more!
I have streamlined my list a bit too down to 4 types of sugar - white, dark muscavado, demerera and icing and 2 of rice - white and brown basmati.
I probably have more beans than i used to and tend to buy dried now rtaher than tinned - except kidney bwans whcih I like to have ready to go.People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

rachbc, I also buy dried beans, they work out cheaper and you can have the amount you want so for me that is more economicalTreat other's how you like to be treated.

I'm moving out of my mother's home with my partner at some point in the next few weeks/months (it's not fixed because of building work that needs doing on the place we're moving to) and I was wondering what kinds of things would be recommended for me to stockpile before leaving as we won't have much to spend on food after bills.
