    :eek:OH GOOD GOD I FORGOT THE MARMITE:eek:

And the the tea. And the emergency Whiskey. And the wine cellar.

Basically I need my own personal supermarket warehouse in my cupboard at all times if I am even going to contemplate making dinner...
  • Hello,
Moving house so have ran-down my store cupboard to next to nothing!
Has anyone any ideas for a complete fresh start? There's only me and my 2yo son, and I'd like to try out cooking just one day to feed us for a month.
Would prefer to try this on a small budget as i've blown some savings on furnishings...
    Thanks all
    :j :D

What did you have in your old store cupboard, and what of that do you want to keep or get away from? So we have an idea of what sort of things you eat or are likely to use.

Till then I'd second pasta (a couple of types, such as one pack shapes, one pack spaghetti) and add rice. Possibly also a bag each of plain and SR flour depending what type of cooking you do and if you bake at all. Maybe stock cubes/pots if you don't make your own stock but I'd wait to buy them until there's a recipe you will use them in, then you know what type to get and don't end up buying them all and never using one or two types.

In fact, I don't go and buy a store cupboard as such, it just appears over time as I buy the staple items when I come to need them and don't have them already.

Have a look at Weezl's website - http://www.cheap-family-recipes.org.uk/index.html. This contains a meal plan for 4 people for a month for £100 and contains all the necessary vitamins, protein, carbs etc that you need. It also shows how to bulk cook some of the meals and freeze. You'll need an extremely large freezer if you do it all!

  • I've decided over the summer holidays that I'm going to try a bit of OS cooking. I'm going to start looking up some recipes now and see what I can find, but are there any staple store cupboard items that people would recommend to me? I'm veggie but my hubby and kids eat chicken and beef. I'd loce to start freezing stuff, but want to have a go first before I decide on buying a bigger freezer!

well for me tinned toms (along wtih onions and garlic) form the basis of so many sauces/ dishes I would never be without them.

dreid lentils and tinned beans are great for veggie dishes

flour, sugar, eggs and butter for baking

    pasta, rice etc
