OP, has the old gentleman's son/daughter tried the sim themselves and found there is s problem or is it that their father needs help with it, has contacted Virgin but they've not helped him resolve the problem ?

For anyone who might need help with their phone, I would recommend dealing with a local branch of Tesco mobile (a Tesco with a phone shop in it) or Carphone W - I have found them both to be very good with customers who need more support and assistance.

Dealing third-hand with a call centre can easily turn into a very frustrating experience.

The OP's friend needs to get a clear view as to the problems with their Dad's phone service and talk to a supervisor at VM, having first agreed authority to speak for the Dad, if it's not already a permanent flag on the account.

Using words like "blackmail" is not helpful or conducive to getting VM to help sort this out, assuming that the friend is also doing this.

I found that Tesco mobile in shop service to be particular good.

No hard sell, just helpful advice.

Tesco can also be good VFM for low usage.
