Cheapest of the cheap cheap weddings...

£650k...? £325k...? A bargain maybe, but well above the kinds of sums we deal in!
That may be the case now but there are people who never thought they would have to pay IHT until the value of their homes went skyhigh.
Thanks - will do. Presumably then that doesn't become an automatic thing if married?
No and it's much cheaper and easier to do a POA now rather than wait until one of you becomes incapable and the other has to go to the Court of Protection in order to make decisions about their spouse.0 -
OK, thanks for that info RE PoA. I'll look into it.
RE IHT. If we both own our house equally (both names on mortgage) and are joint tenants, in the event of the death of one of us, does the "other half" of the house form part of an estate for IHT purposes. Or does the house simply become the other persons without having anything to do with IHT?
Thanks again for all the wonderful help

Delay things til Mon 20 Feb, so you can snap up the definitely post Valentines chocs & flowers for witnesses?
Family rings can save you a *bundle*, as can charity shop/unredeemed pledge rings (although the latter may have tales you'd rather not dwell on.) Ask any remaining female relatives if they'd donate a ring to the matrimonial cause? Herself may get choices & the others can help fund the paperwork (or be returned to correct relative).
All the very best!0 -

Are rings essential in an RO wedding? I didn't think they were - it depends which set of words you decide.0 -

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but do you HAVE to have rings for and can you be married without them? If you have to have them, would one of the Haribo ones suffice? At least then I get to eat it afterwards!DigForVictory wrote: »All the very best!

Check your local RO website for info like this about the wording of the ceremony -

We did this last year.
Just had our two adult children there.
No rings, no change of names.
The only added expense was an extra copy of the marriage certificate purchased on the day.0 -
Seperate to the wedding, there d be costs if you wanted to change either of your names but otherwise as long as you have all the documents you need to give notice then you ve covered everything

What costs?
I did change my name when we got married (as the OP basic cheap job) and I don't remember paying anything to change my name at all (waited till I needed to renew my passport anyway and then did it then), driving licence didn't charge - and just did it all with the one certificate0 -
