Ive looked back and from oct 2014 - oct 2015 i paid by dd. They sent a renewal at that point i accepted the renewal but chose to pay that year in full, called and paid it, dd was canx at that point.
I am trying to understand what the OP has actually done, the story has changed again from the original post, I am not sure if they actually know what they arranged or not with the DD and payments and not knowing £69 a month was going from a bank account which they claim to know what was going in and out of.

I was with green insurance for 2 years. At the very first year i set it up on DD but then a few days after the policy started, and called and payed the annual fee.

The following year i remained with green and when i got the renewal through i called and paid annually again.

I know dustinh im gutted that i didnt bloody realise that my insurance was due for renewal. One of those things that just passed me by. Very silly of me.

Can only see what happens now at this point. Tbh if they say they have been fair and are within the dd gtee then i'll accept that. Worth a shot though as i dont see that its fair what they have done.

If the DD guarantee fails, I would also escalate your complaint with the company, and if that fails, the Financial Ombudsman. While not being aware of the renewal date so that you could chase up the documents won't help your case, the DD rather than a card payment is worth a shot, as you most recently made a card payment. To me, auto-renewing becomes more unreasonable when they are not the company that you took out the original policy with. They'd have to have informed you that your cover would lapse on x date if you didn't renew, so arguably they may not have saved you from an accidental no insurance conviction. Before using these points, I would check that they have your up to date address. Have you moved since first taking out cover in October 2014?

Before going to the ombudsman, I would point it out to them that this is something you're prepared to do. It can cost them £550 whether you win or lose, which is more than they'd pay if they just refunded you.

I had green insurance from oct 14 to oct 15 on a little peugeot. I pid by dd something like £18pm.

In october 2015 i got my renewal thru. It was a good price. The renewal said that they would continue on dd. As u would imagine, as i was already on dd. When i got that renewal thru, either before the policy had started or a few days after (i cant remember it was so long ago!!) i called and paid the policy in full. Hence the DD stopping. As i had paid in full.
This policy then ran from oct 15 to oct 16.
No renewal document in oct, no policy document in oct. And ive put my hands up and said i forgot that the insurance was due, generally i get a renewal document and deal with it promptly.

So the insurer has gone ahead and renewed the policy. Thinking this was ok as i had not cancelled the auto renewal. But i had not cancelled the auto renewal because i didnt have any renewal document.

Upon starting the new policy they have reinstated my direct debit. I did not know they were doing this. As i paid in full the year prior why have they still got my bank details for dd??

I have managed throughout the day to find previous documents which is why i now know how i previously paid and what previously happened. The advisor at kwik fit when i spoke with them this morning was the one that told me the reason they had set a dd on this new renewal in oct 16 was because the previously policy was originally going to renew on dd but i had called and paid in full so they still have my dd details on file.

Really, why are you being so nasty about this? It was a genuine mistake, i said, if you read back i 'knew' what was in and out of the account as only 5 bills go out. I didnt need to check it. I only checked it today because i had switch energy providers and i was checking the first payment had been taken.

I monitor my ordinary bank account which i use daily, constantly. I get that you would find it strange for me not to check the account this dd hs come from. But its not my everyday account.

I literally asked for advice because i didnt know where i stood with regard to the dd being reinstated after a year of it not being active. Lol. The 'story has changed' as i have found more info out as the day has gone on. There is really no need to be rude.

Sorry the above was in relation to cajef's post. Jeez.

Kim, thats really handy info, thank you so much. I get the angle of me not making the agreement with kwik fit. Thank you for your advice.
  • Just wanted to update you all re this.

I had a phone call from the complaints team today (who were aware if what i was unhappy with and that i had claimed back the dd) and they explained that although i have a valid point they had still provided me with insurance (which i never disagreed with)
They decided to give a refund of a discount that would have been applied had i called at renewal, and i was to then pay the remaining back to them.

I claimed back £360 via dd gtee, they required me to pay them £176 today. Which i obviously agreed. This has then settled it.

Just wanted to let you know the outcome.
