Tesco Bank - can't have more than one current account

  • Surely, everyone in the country must be trying to open at least one of these accounts. 3% is not to be sniffed at, esp. with so few conditions. I wonder when Tesco will call time?

Thats' probably why I've not even received so much as a confirmation email from them since applying for it. Perhaps they're already struggling with the demand ?

I am aware that many people have two Tesco current accounts.

This does not mean the thread title is "wrong", it is simply a report of the OP's experience.

    It is also my experience.

I only have one Tesco current account and I am unable to open a second one online, because it says I already have TWO current accounts (which I don't)

I had a similar problem with Tesco, when trying to open second accounts for my husband and myself.

However, I rang their helpline, where they were very helpful, checked our details and suggested that I go back on line to try again to open the accounts, which I did, with no further problems.
A cunning plan, Baldrick? Whatever it was, it's got to be better than pretending to be mad; after all, who'd notice another mad person around here?.......Edmund Blackadder.

    That's my problem too.

I do not have any Tesco accounts yet but that statement is grammatically incorrect because answering YES or NO means the same.

I'm currently on hold (15 minutes so far) with 0345 835 3353 to see what they say.

P.S. If the statement had been a question worded, "Do you have more than one current account with Tesco Bank already?" a NO answer would work but with the 'you do not' wording, the problem appears.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I remember seeing that not as a question, but as one of the requirements for being eligible to apply for an account.

Agreed, but is the answer YES or NO?

My phone call resulted in, as expected, the agent having no idea how to advise me.

I've now resorted to making an application for my wife too - with that question being answered YES for her and NO for me. I wonder if either will be declined?

I opened my second one recently and can't be sure how I answered the question, but my guess is that if you currently have 0 or 1 accounts then the answer that will allow you to proceed is NO.

    I think it's a YES.

I can't look now, but from memory isn't it something like:

    - You are a UK resident.
    - You are 18 or over.
    - You do not have more than one account already.

There's a YES and NO button, with the YES already highlighted, so you just move on.

Someone who can start a dummy application on their internet banking, how is my jetlagged memory..? (Probably terrible.)

    From the apply online page:

    "Make sure you're eligible

Are all these statements true about you?
You are 18 years of age or over.
You do not have more than one current account with Tesco Bank already.

    Yes

    No"

    The exact wording is:
    Make sure you're eligible

Are all these statements true about you?
    • You are 18 years of age or over.
    • You do not have more than one current account with Tesco Bank already.

Are all these statements true about you?
    • You have the permission of the second applicant to apply for a joint account.
    • You are both 18 years of age or over.
    • You do not have more than one current account with Tesco Bank already, and nor does your joint applicant.
(section covers both sole and joint applications)

Below this are two radio buttons, neither of which are ticked.

It's difficult to see how it could be misinterpreted?
