  • We are going to Puerto de Santiago in November for our first visit to Tenerife. It's our first self-catering holiday with teenagers. We normally stay all inclusive, We are toying with hiring a car as it seems we're a fair way from the airport, but I'm a little concerned about parking etc. Any tips please?

Definitely use Autoreisin to rent the car from because it's in the airport, you don't pay till the day, full insurance included, just return it with how much fuel it had when you got it and it's cheap.

Parking is very good in all the areas I have driven too and free on street parking is easily found. Just read up on the meaning of the different colour lines.

Do not attempt the cable car if you have a fear of heights, I did and had to lie on the floor, terrified and had the return journey to look forward to as well. You can drive up the mountain, whether by car or tour bus which will get you up through the clouds to over 7000 feet, the views if it is clear are spectacular.

Certainly go to La Oratava and Santa Cruz, both easily reached by bus, full details are here https://www.titsa.com, available in English but don't try to do too much. Relax and enjoy the air and good food

We go to PdlC every year are will be going again in 2 weeks :). We love it. Lots of nice walks - the Rambla de Castro is a favourite. I agree with all that Ireenee2 says, especially using the local buses. We have hired a car before and it was a total PITA as parking in difficult in Puerto. We like to visit Santa Cruz, La Orotava and Santa Ursula by bus when we go, and don't bother heading for the south of the island: It's a long trip, and we've been several times before on different holidays.

    Hope you enjoy it!

    Hello
    many thanks - much appreciated.
we are also going in two weeks time - 17th feb. I don't drive but my brother does but hes not keen on driving anywhere other than home (UK).
I shall do some research on santa cruz, la orotava and santa ursula ( as I have no clue ).
I think we wont bother travelling to the south as per majority of suggestions.
    thank you for the suggestion.

Many questions are fine, but a few specifics from you would help with advice. e.g.:
    Are you 22 or 72?
    What month are you going?
Do you plan to rent a car?
You arrive in daytime or at night?
Are you interested in only Siam Park type attractions or historic towns and culture etc, or both?
    Beach?
    Etc...

    Hello
    I am 35 years old.
we are going on 17th Feb
No we wont hiring a car.
We will arrive there in the afternoon
I am interested in all types of attractions as well as beaches.
I hope you can help me further.
    TIA

A phobia for heights should not affect a trip to Mt Teide at all - it is a massive caldera - a very wide plateau inside the walls of a collapsed volcano

In the centre is the 'current' cone of the volcano - comparatively small - a miniature (and black) Mt Fuji - the cable car goes up this cone - the rest of the caldera is a great space with wonderful plants, rock formations, and super vistas

Going this month is really great - all the spring flowers and plants will be green and in full bloom - I always try to visit hotter climates in spring - less dust and more colour - going to the Algarve in March for the same reason

Personally I wouldn't rent a car - but then I hate driving on the 'wrong' side of the road - that was my husband's task in the past !!

Do enjoy your trip - a good book on the plane is very useful to pass the time - I once spent a plane trip writing up the first draft of my Degree Dissertation - concentrated my mind a great deal

    hello
    many thanks for this advice.
    very motivating.

I agree with what Irenee, Second, and others say.

The north can often be quite cool and rainy at this time of year, but otherwise I much prefer it to the concrete jungle tourist areas in the south.

You will presumably arrive at the south airport (TFS), do you have a transfer arranged to P la Cruz? A rental car for four days would probably be cheaper than one way by taxi, and you would get to do a lot more in the time. I was going to suggest you drive the scenic route over Teide to the north if you don't fly in too late. Since you're bold enough to take on your fear of flying, why not encourage your brother to conquer his own reluctance to drive outside UK? Driving conditions are very good there.

Then you can take the opportunity while you're there to overcome all limitations by going up to the peak - you have to apply for permission in advance to take the final climb, but it's well worth it...
