Would you pay?

Would it be feasible/possible/desirable to pay a small fee for membership of this forum? It would ensure that only paid up members had access and might cut down on trolls and abuse thus saving the moderators time, effort and energy. After all the money we have saved thanks to Martin and the site I doubt many regulars would be put off by £1 fee to join and if it makes a fortune Martin can always give a bit more to a favourite good cause.

Or perhaps members with a high post count (bone fide real people rather than AEs or trolls) could have their fee waived.

I for one would not pay for membership of this forum... it is a publicly accessible forum, open to all in the spirit of saving money... people on here give their time and advice for free and thats the way it should stay IMHO... You will get trolls and spammers on any site and I think the folk on here deal with them pretty effectively!
Oh and why should having a load of stars and posts mean you don't have to pay? That comment really rankles me for some reason... sorry! :rolleyes:

I really don't think that a £1 is going to prevent trolls trolling and abusive people from being abusive. I think it would be more likely to have the opposite effect and put off the people who genuinely contribute to the forums and leave all the sad people who have nothing else to do with their time other than sit and troll/be abusive on forums.

When I first read this I thought, why not, pay £1 (I have saved loads more than that using this site) but actually thinking about it, I don't think it would make any difference to the dodgy characters and I think it may well put people off who initially come to the site...

I think it would put a lot of genuine people off especially if they are coming here seeking elp because they are almost at point of bankruptcy.

I wouldnt pay, what makes this site so popular, is that there is no fee. Its a Moneysaving site. that means it is about saving money, not paying for the privilage.

If I thought I would have to pay to come on here, I would simply log out and go elsewhere. I'm sure a lot of people would do likewise.

Should a poster charge for offering his or her services to MSE?

Well... I would personally not mind it, as these days I *can* afford it. And I already voluntarily send contributions sometimes to another website ( nowt to do with money tho ) Ive been involved with for a few years, because I am so grateful that it exists and have got a lot from being part of it. But as a general thing, no, I don't feel it would be a good thing for MSE... I don't think it would really deter huge numbers of spammers/trolls ... and if I had been asked for even a cursory contribution to a website in the days when I was so broke that I would walk up and down the pier for hours checking the change drawers of all the slot machines for enough money to buy milk and bread, it would have really put me off - which would have been a real shame.

maybe MSE could charge us for the "ignore" privilage. Heck I would set up a DD Anything to to rid the TROLLS.

This site is free, change to paid and it will not be as good.

People give up there advice and time for free, if you started to charge people would want to be paid.
