Not accepted for a new account due to a debt on a property .

Hi all,

So I tried to open a Nationwide flexaccount today. It went through the credit check fine. Then came up with a technical error. So rang up and they said the application hasn't worked the error lost the application so pop into branch to redo it as at the moment this is a known error with certain browsers.
So popped into the branch, and discovered that the application went through but got rejected by the fraud team due to an undisclosed debt at an undisclosed addressed.
The fraud team wasn't allowed to say anymore giving details on what property. (I moved six months ago so both properties were put on the application).

The guy in branch was great but couldn't help further.
I do have a DMP in place which is just a few months off of being paid off. Which they said had nothing to do with the rejection.

So has anyone had this before or know how I can find out more.

Thanks.

This really is not making a lot of sense.
You state 'due to a debt on a property' which implies some sort of defaulted mortgage or defaulted secured loan or some sort of charge being put on a property (presumably following a ccj).
Later in your OP you state 'an undisclosed debt at an undisclosed address'.
These two statements have very different meanings. Please clarify.
You say the credit check went through fine. How do you know that? Either way, these reasons imply a credit check type problem. What has either of these reasons got to do with fraud or the fraud team?
You know what property or properties you own. You will have to check the land registry to see if there are any charges on any such property(s) that you are unaware of.
You will have to check your credit files for any defaults etc at (presumably) previous addresses.
You mention the word 'undisclosed' but applications for bank accounts don't usually have a section to disclose debts so how were you actually supposed to have made such a disclosure?
The original reason for being sent to the branch is a bit odd as well. If there is a known problem with certain browsers why did he not tell you which and advise you as to what browser should be used?

I believe you are entitled to ask Nationwide which credit agency they used, and then you can get a copy of your file from said agency (not sure of cost but it is not expensive). This would shine some light on the matter maybe. Agree with above - unlikely fraud team would have got involved on pure debt problems.

    Noddle (Call Credit) is free.

A statutory report costs £2 from Equifax and Experian.
  • Hello.

    Thanks for your reply.

Sorry, hopefully this will make it a bit clearer.

    I don't own any properties. I'm a renter.

I moved 6 months ago so had to put my current address and my old address on the application form.

It went through the credit check process online fine. Then after I except all the bits a technical error arose so I contacted Nationwide by phone. The guy told me to go into branch as it'll be easier due to the technical error is a problem at the moment.

When I went into branch the guy could see my application and that it had a SID rejection by it, which happens once all applications get reviewed by the fraud department of the bank.

So the guy in branch rang the fraud team to find out what it means and they said it is due to a undisclosed amount at an undisclosed property. They couldn't say anymore than that.

I've checked my credit file and there is nothing on it.

So can a property either my last one or the current one have a black mark against it due to old tenants that lived there ?

    Noddle provides data from Callcredit.

    Clearscore provides data from Equifax.

    Nationwide use Experian.

In a word - yes. Although the CRAs are now banned from blacklisting properties, the financial institutions can do what they like. In theory, the blacklisting can't be shared between providers.

Yes you can definitely have a black mark against your credit file from joint unpaid bills etc from a previous property. But you say that nothing shows on your credit file. What I am therefore confused about is why the FRAUD team are getting involved.
  • The fraud team department or whoever it is is the team that check the application over. Maybe it's not the main fraud team
Within Nationwide but that's the help desk department the guy in branch had to ring to find out what an SID rejection meant. As he didn't know.

I have no debts against either properties.

I am assuming then that one of the properties have a black mark
    Against them.

    Thanks for help.

When you have a look at your three credit reports look for the section entitled G.A.I.N.

    Info: https://help.creditexpert.co.uk/help/sv635/Credit_report/whats_GAIN

I'm not implying you've done anything wrong OP but if you've somehow been erroneously linked to someone else's activity at a previous address it might be worth investigating?
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.
