Refused credit - don't know what to do

Hi, I am looking for advice as I don't know where to start and what to do. Credit and credit rating are a new thing for me as I am not from the Uk and never needed to worry about it, but now that I am a homeowner I have had the necessity to come to terms that I can't ignore the matter anymore.
It all started when I wanted to apply for a credit meter, as the pay as you go the previous owner left in the property is so expensive!
I asked British Gas and they run a credit check tellin me I was refused. I never paid any bill late, never had a mobile phone contract or any debt, I have a credit card and I always clear the balance before it's due and I have been accepted for a mortgage in principle from my bank (although I didn't needed the mortgage in the end).
I check my credit score on noddle every month and it's always excellent. However I've been refused by British gas.
Because I couldn't get my head around it and thought British gas probably didn't even run a check, the next day I went to a Vodafone shop and applied for a phone contract, which has been rejected as well.
What do you suggest I should do?
I have checked Experian and my score is 999, but I have read on this forum that is a bit pointless.
Will I ever be able to get anything through credit?
I work and I have quite a good salary, so that shouldn't be the problem either.
Please help!

Check your three credit files - not the numbers - but the data. What is on each of them?0

Transfer to EDF. You may have to transfer on a pre-payment meter, but thereafter they should be able to swap you to a so-called "credit' meter pretty much straight away. They don't assault you with a CRA hard credit check and as an added bonus they don't report your account to the CRAs. Otherwise, look for some of the smaller suppliers that similarly don't report - not sure which are the best.0

Make sure information within your reports is correct. Check Equifax, Experian & Callcredit. Make sure your current credit accounts are showing, address is up to date and Electoral role. The fact you have been refused suggests there is a possible issue somewhere.0

Sounds to me like you have no credit history and this is what is causing you problems.
Are you on the electoral roll? If yes, does this show on your credit files?
Do you have a bank account, is this showing on all 3?
Same goes for your credit card, is this showing also?
How long have you lived in the UK?

You're quite right. GingerBob won't agree.0

Hi OP. I had similar originally with BG. They said I failed a credit check (I had checked my score and is was fine). I put a complaint in and the got it escalated. Short while later they agreed to install credit meters.Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.0
