Shopsalot - does exactly what it says on the tin..

Shopsalot

I do. I cant help it (I could if I really tried but i love to shop). So here is my attempt to help myself.

Hopefully by writing it down I can stop myself and pay off my debts.

So this will run in part like an extended Bank statement, and in part like an explanation to my bank manager (I so wish I still had one and then my spending wouldnt go unchecked!)

Little bit about me - I am an accountant, as I said - does exactly what it says on the tin. I know where every penny of my money is and where it is spent. I have a budget, I account, I have a good memory and a head for figures. So that is not the problem.

I earn well - that is the problem. A lot of money flows through my hands in any one month, I have lost sight of the value of money. And I am a little brat - if i want it i get it. Shopsalot - big problem.

Please feel free to comment, please feel free to ignore the thread completely. However, I have set a budget figure for cash expenses and I am comfortable with the debt free date it gives me, so please dont advise me to give up my nails, hair, magazines, sky etc. I have worked very hard to earn my lifestyle and I want to live within my means, not be mean with my living!:rotfl:

So - here is statement number one - with all feable excuses.

Spends:
£35 - jeans - sooo cute, flaired!
£30 - drinks with friends Friday night - Had to wear the jeans
£30 - Cutlery set and glasses, dinner party saturday my old ones were not up to scratch.
£59 - Body Shop. I went in for hair putty (i have hair extensions) only to find they dont do it any more. But they do do a lot of other lovely things I cant beleive i lived without.
£100 - Wii controllers and Nunchucks - had to entertain the guests.
£104 - food for dinner party from Waitrose.

Income generated
£200 - sold old phone, jeans, memeory card, pair of shoes - on Ebay.

Current debt:
1st Account CC - £10592
1st Accound o/d - £2106
2nd Account CC - £4991

Todays debt = £17689.

To save money today I have:
Opened another bank account. I will pay myself £200 per week for all non-bill items, except it will include 2nd Credit Card - little bit of money management is my punishment.

Cancelled hair appointment made for next week. I am having my nails done on Friday and going out for dinner on saturday. I cant afford hair as well on £200.

Roll on tomorrow 'cos today feels quite good!
Bye:D

You have admitted you have a problem, and that is the first step, have you tried to find other ways of making yourself feel better? (no smutty comments plz), as thats what most addictions revolve around.

Hopefully by writing it down I can stop myself and pay off my debts.

Definately true, also seems to have wound people up

You do have a bank manager, yourself!, on your sig it says DFD 2008, this could be so much sooner if you dealt with this frivolous spending

Successful people say we can judge how well we are doing by our bank balance, im in the same boat but improving, you being an accountant should now that compound interest is really working against you here

I earn well - that is the problem. A lot of money flows through my hands in any one month, I have lost sight of the value of money. And I am a little brat - if i want it i get it. Shopsalot - big problem.

Very brave to admit, have you posted an SOA on here? Also i would keep a spending diary, im sure the shock will kick start you into action

Lifestyles of the rich and famous eh? All these things are so temporary and yet the only thing that remains long term is the debt.
As you have said you are comfortable and happy doing this, but what is the real issue here?
I think people do deserve to treat themselves especially for working hard, but just look at the numbers.

Lost cause? Nah, but you have made your choice, there seems to be lots of spending here, im sure if you were on spendaholics or whatever youd be going throgh profiling to figure out the cause of this spending.

The one thing that does strike me is how can an accountant be this reckless with money?

Surely your sense tells you that basics first (such as having no debt) and then a reasonable amount of treats.

I think you could do with defining what you want help with?

The steps you have made today are in the right direction, perhaps make sure you only ever spend cash, real money from now on to regain the idea of what value it has.

£200 a week is an awful lot for non bills. I thought I was being cheeky by allowing myself £200 per week for everything including food for 5, bills and petrol. As I've said, I'm not sure that you're asking from us, but my advice would be to take advantage of the good salary by clearing the debt as fast as you can, cut all nonsense spending, ebay what you can and then think about future goals. How about saving for a house or to be mortgage free? Then you really can justify any amount of jeans spending, because it will be your cash, not the credit card companies.

Hey Kev, I wasn't being rude, I really do want to know what kinda parties she throws cos they sound like fun! :rotfl:

Everyone's different in dealing with their debts and if the OP feels that she will be able to pay off her debts in that time and is happy about that then who are we to comment, IMHO anyway.

Oh right, I didn't know there had been a post deleted :o

Oh, so they're not real nunchucks then? Maybe I won't bother trying to blag myself an invite!

  • I'm just wondering how her debt free date is Dec 08 when she has over 17k sterling to pay off. Is this taking into account paying off the credit cards but not spending on them? And, are you spending on them?
  • 1 - Not a wind up - everyone's debt is relative. Mine is affordable in my situation - but i dont want it. Would i have more support if I had gotten near bankruptcy before doing something about it???

2 - nunchuck is a nintendo wii remote (though i may have spelt it wrong;) )

3 - I agree with the spending diary - this is my method of the diary as I know i wont write it on paper. I have given myself the £200 limit as that is what i feel comfortable with whilst still allowing my debts to be paid off in chunks.

4 - Again I go back to relativity, I havent posted my soa so my income isnt stated. My spending is not exactly "reckless" just needs to be more controlled.

Thanks for the comments so far, i certainly wont be allowed to take my eye off the ball! Interesting views.
