I wouldn't put mine on the hob but I have put it in the microwave to thicken things at the end. Just use the minimum of cooking liquid and then use a cornflour and water mix to thicken it up

I've used some cheapo powdered mash stirred into mine to thicken. Also I've removed some veggies and whizzied them with the stick blender and then stirred back into the pot.

You can also remove some of the cooking liquid and allow to cool then freeze for using at a later date.

Actually I've found a lot of casserole type dishes are better cooked in the oven. I don't eat a lot of meat now but when I did I found casseroles are best in the oven & stews on the stove top (hob). Seems to produce a lot more flavour & thickness.

I thought after one exploding you would have learned your lesson. :D

If the mix is a bit thin bung in some porridge oats, or dry stuffing mix to thicken it up .

One of my slow cookers is a CrockPot brand and that one I can put on the hob. But I have to use the heat diffuser that came with it. It's just a metal grill that I put on the hob, then the crockpot on top of that.

I usually toss the meat in seasoned flour then seal before putting it in the pot and adding all the other ingredients. If I don't have much time I just bung it in the slow cooker without sealing.

It's usually enough to thicken the sauce.

I sometimes take the juice out in a ladle, thicken and season it in a saucepan and put it back. Or when I want more roasted style meal I'll ladle off the juice, finish the meat and veg in the oven, and thicken and season the juice up into a gravy to serve separately for the fussy kid who can't decide whether she likes it!

When you cook pasta, you can keep the starchy water that you drain off from it. Keep it in the fridge, and then use it for thickening things another day.

AussieLass - what's the difference between a stew and a casserole? I've never been sure.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
