I am planning to chuck a load of chicken portions (legs/thighs) a load of veg and potatoes in my slow cooker make up some chicken oxo and pour it over, leave it all day and hopefully come home from work to a lovely dinner.
My question....do I need to add anything to thicken the juice or should the potatoes do that for me??????

Hello redmel
See how it is about an hour before you want to serve it. You could sprinkle somg chicken gravy granules in OR mix a little cornflour to a thin paste with some cold water (add some of the cooking liquid to it and then put back into the slowcooker) and mix that in OR sprinkle in some instant mash and mix well. Sometimes the potatoes that you've put in will just 'fall' enough to thicken it naturally - that's why it's best to check towards the end of the time. Another way is to remove some of the veggies and potatoes with a slotted spoon and give them a 'whizz' with a handblender and add back into the mixture.
A tin of chopped tomatoes goes well in there as well - but don't put as much water with the chicken oxos if you do that. Just make sure that the veggies (esp the potatoes) are covered with water.
I'm sure you've thought about this but just in case - I'd recommend removing the skin from the chicken portions before putting in the dish - or it will be very greasy with slimy skin.
good luck0 -
Hi, great advice as above, but just to reiterate about the skin, if you don't remove it you might be disappointed as it will be very greasy.
Hope you enjoy your meal.0 -
Very greasy and pale unless you brown the chicken pieces in a frying pan first. It also adds a lot more flavour.
I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...

And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!0 -
hi redmel,
i think that the chicken will great done in sc with potaotes and veg. :j
I paid £25 for my slow cook about two years and it has been money so well spent, it is fab to come home from work on a winter's night to smell a home cooked meal as you open the door. bliss
I am using my sc tommorow, as I am going back to work, so just defrosting the stewing steak now, ready to put beef rogan josh sauce in with it, for tommorow nights tea:rotfl:'If you judge people, you have no time to love them'

I used to use McDougals Thickening Granules but now I use Asda Smartprice Instant Mash at 15p per pack. A couple of tablespoons stirred in thickens just about anything and doesnt alter the flavour.0

hi all
Ive had 2 slow cookers in the past and both have exploded :rotfl:
i think what it is is i make a cassarole and the sauce is never thick enough for me so i put em on stove top to mix in some cornflour but they do not like cooker tops
so my question is can u get one that u can use on oven top ? or how do u thicken your cassaroles etc ?0 -
I add a corn flour mixture an hour before the end.
I have an electic hob so have not tried it on there.0 -
If your slow cooker pot is ceramic (china/pottery type) then it can't go on most hobs. I'd play safe and say no. I'm fairly new to the slow cooker but I'd agree about the cornflour (mix with a little water then add to it while it's still cooking) or just cut down a bit on the amount of liquid at the start.0
