My laptop ( a relatively fast i5 with 8Gb ram) is trying to update win 10 home and is taking forever - presumably it has downloaded the files but is at 18% after 45 mins - anyone else with the same problem ?
This is only a small monthly update...

Shut down , choose the "restart" option rather than closing it downEx forum ambassador

I am back up - took 90 mins to annoy the hell out of me - by re-enabling cortana and edge which I had disabled using WinAero - and then I was greeted with a "HI....." and was told that "Windows is updating your security for you.."
This is sooooo annoying..0 -
Are you sure it's Windows 10 Home?
Because if it was Windows 10 Pro, and if you'd originally set the option (not available in Win 10 Home) to Defer Upgrades from Windows 10 version 1511, you'd probably find that the Defer period has expired and it is upgrading itself to the Anniversary Update (version 1607).
The long upgrade and 'Hi...' suggests that behaviour, as it's what you get when a complete new Windows 10 version gets installed.
I've had this Defer period expire on my computer in the last few days and I gather I'm not the only one.
Edit: I guess it's also possible that some tweaking tools might be able to a registry change to simulate the same 'Defer Upgrades' behaviour in Win 10 Home without having the official option.
But I'd definitely check the windows version and also update history. If there's no update history (or hardly any) it's because you're on a new version of windows.0 -

It IS home and yes, it does appear that 1607 was missed in my last rebuild (2 months ago) - but is now running....0 -

OK My morning problems were caused by over 2.5Gb of windows updates
This is starting to get silly with the huge amounts of data that MS are expecting/forcing us to download on a monthly basis
Fot me with an unlimited fast fibre connection - perhaps it can be said to be acceptible
But for some (still on dial up) - IMPOSSIBLE
A 56k dial up connection - running at say 35k would take many hours to download this data
Yes - you can put off the download for a few weeks - but in the end - it is inevitable that you MUST accept it...0 -
Such people can set their connection to 'metered' so they can control what happens automatically, and for instance download the version 1607 update to a USB stick from a better connection elsewhere.OK My morning problems were caused by over 2.5Gb of windows updates

By doing this- you are only delaying the inevitable...
Many people (my Dad for example) don't have access to other connections - he is on a (max 3Mbps) ADSL connection
Yes, of course I can download the update file for him - but how many people realise that this is an option and are forced to leave their PC's running 24/7 to ensure that they are updated ?0
