seized toe adjuster nut

Options
Hi

Car is a Honda FRV 1.8 petrol

Went over an invisible speed bump a bit too fast yesterday and thought id get tracking checked. The fronts are green but the rear toe are both in red (as is camber but that's not adjustable).

Rear left toe is 0.02 degrees and rear right is 0.07 degrees (needs to be between 0.02 and 0.07 so both mines are now outside tolerance). The total rear toe is 0.09 degrees and within tolerance.

The alignment centre couldn't undo the nut as its seized, he said "both rear toe adjusters (concentric cams) requires nuts removing and bolts turning in the bush more than 360 degrees". cost me £10 for the report.

I took it to another garage to unseize the nut and they said it has plastic bushes so can't heat the nut otherwise it could make things worse. They said the whole control arm needs replacing and are hard to source on this vehicle.

Should I be worried about increasing uneven tyre wear? would you leave it or would you change the control arm?

What are your opinions? The car drives to the right when holding steering straight, The guy who tried to do the alignment said the rear wheels are pointing to the left so the car will try and move to the right when driving straight.

should I ask the garage to risk heating the nut with a rubber bush?

Thanks

The total rear toe-in is within tolerance, assuming the garages checked for worn bushes, forget it.

I would love to know how they are able to get meaningful separate figures for each wheel when they make no attempt to set the longitudinal axis of the car.

  • it was a hunter 4 wheel alignment. I dont like the idea of holding the steering a little to the left for the car to drive straight. But also dont have much spare cash as I'm looking for a job.

The garage never checked for worn bushes.

Plenty of other ways to unseive it rather than just heat.

Grind it off with a small cutoff tool, very little heat if careful, nut splitters.

There are tools that can heat a nut cherry red and where little heat is transferred to the shaft. Try a proper garage where they dont mind getting their hands dirty.

What are these tools that seemingly defy the laws of physics?

    Surely that's within tolerance!

Those numbers are unlikely to cause a problem, for what it might cost it's not worth doing anything.

    They should have

I still don't see how it works, there is no reference datum.
I quite liked the "just bung the gubbins on the warped wheels without checking" as well ;)

Do you have to hold pressure on the wheel to drive straight (which means something is bent), or is it just turned off centre? (which means someone was lazy when they adjusted the tracking)

A nut splitter doesn't apply heat.
