John Lewis Broadband

Options
Hello,

I am still considering whether I want to stay with Plusnet, having now changed to Extra (much better, thanks again for all your help previously). I see from a flyer through the door that John Lewis are doing a six months free offer till the end of the month, which I must admit is pretty tempting.

I called up John Lewis Broadband to enquire more about it, and the fellow who answered the phone mistakenly said "Hello, Plusnet Broadband" before quickly correcting himself to say "Er, hello, John Lewis Broadband" which I thought was quite amusing (not to mention ironic!)

I got to thinking about what he had said and it occurred to me that maybe J.L. BB are administered by Plusnet anyway so there wouldn't be a great deal of point in switching, apart from the fact that I'd get 6 months free on John Lewis - quite a bargaining tool! Before I call them up again, does anyone know if JLBB are indeed administered by Plusnet?

Many thanks! :)

Yes, Plusnet are the contractor for the 'new' JL broadband service. JL don't operate their own service and never have, it's just a branded product.

Forget about 6m free, what matters is the total contract cost.
You'll never get as good a deal as is offered to new customers though.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • I was with Plusnet BB, phoned up for my mac code to switch to John Lewis BB. They tried to do a deal with me but could not match the 6mth free offer. They would give me unlimited BB for £17.99mth but nothing free. I declined & was switched to JL BB last week easy enough.

Plusnet do supply BB for John Lewis so the switch was painless.

Does anyone know if this is any good?

I've bought a new Internet enabled TV, which means I'm eligible to claim 6 months free broadband with John Lewis Broadband - so £12.50 a month over 12 months for 38mb broadband, evening and weekend calls and £13.50 line rental. Struggling to see how I can get that sort of deal cheaper elsewhere (unless I get a good deal with Sky when they put me through to retentions.........)

The only thing that concerns me is John Lewis traffic management policy - ie. I will probably want to use the TV for streaming movies etc. but streaming usage is capped at 10mb during peak periods - does anyone know if this is adequate for streaming?

    Grateful for any advice offered.

This is simply a rebranded Plusnet product. And of course Plusnet FTTC is simply a resold BT service.
No, if you are streaming any quantity of movies then 10GB (not 10MB) is likely to be insufficient.

    Thanks for this - I don't think I made myself clear though so apologies;

The monthly download allowance is 100GB which should be fine - it's the peak time capping of streaming at 10mb speed (rather than the 38mb line speed advertised) which I was concerned about.

I was wondering if 10mb is quick enough for streaming movies etc.

10Mb is fine for streaming (10 mb wouldn't be as a lowercase "m" means "milli"!).

    Thanks for this.

I think I'll go for it. £12.50 a month for 12 months of fibre broadband is a pretty good deal, so I'll probably go for it and look to switch again at the end of the contract if there's any better deals.

Now into Week 6 for a migration of ADSL from PlusNet to John Lewis (a.k.a PlusNet).

"We'll have you up and running in 10 to 14 days"
I get the feeling they're taking the ****.

    Monday is cancel-this-order day!

I can't see the point in paying JL rates for a branded service supplied by Plusnet?
The supplier is the same, so it's effectively just a billing change. Are you having a new line, or upgrading to FTTC, or having work done involving BT Openreach, which is usually where the delays occur?

  • Slightly worried to read this as I was just thinking of joining JL Broadband.....
