how can you compare quotes for a tree that you've not seen and decalre they've been taken for a ride. The height of the tree is often not the issue(though it does have a big bearing on it admittedly). Like my earlier post myself and a neighbour had the same style of tree removed but our quotes were £1k apart. Both were Scots pines that were 30-40ft high but had a spread larger than that. The main bulk of the cost was in getting rid of it as there was well over 5 tonnes of wood per tree. The 'felling' safely of the tree also took a day for ours(nearly 2 for the next door tree) then there was the grinding out of the stump. The work was undertaken by 3 blokes over two days on the recent one. I'm not sure I know of many tree surgeons who'll spend 6 'man days' along with teh maintenance of a chipper, numerous chain saws, safety equipment, trailers, vans and public liability insurance for £16 per day each.

an average 20 ft conifer tree is hardly going to have the girth of a californian redwood is it?
i would cut down these down all day for a grand. (and quote sight unseen too).

I appreciate that it's just the tree isn't always the only factor in deciding on a price was my point.

Its a 20ft tree a pair of step ladders and 20 mins later its a 10ft tree, £1000 for at the worst half days work and you think he was not taken for a ride, give me strength. I took down 23 15ft conifers in a day cut them up ready for burning when they are have dried out and took the leaves to the dump the following morning, and that is stumps out of the ground as well, just cut them off at 4ft and rock them and with the use of an axe bingo.

again, he didn't say he paid £1k to remove a 20ft conifer.

I'm glad all 20ft trees are the same where you live though, I pity the tree surgeons and their lack of work
  • I am 64 if I can do it then most people can as well. £100 chainsaw good value.

We have just been quoted £200 to remove the top ten feet off a conifer which was higher than the house roof. The job took about 4 hours with two men and included the cost of removing all the debris. Tree loppers now have to pay to dispose of such commercial rubbish at officially designated site and that was included in the price.

A lot will also depend on whether you need the the guy to have insurance and expect him to dispose of the waste legally.

If the tree is near a road, building or fence do you want his insurance to pay up if something goes wrong ?

Are you happy to have the waste fly tipped?

Done properly & legally costs a lot more simply because of the costs of being legal.

If you want it done legally expect £200 - £300 unless its very difficult to get to or in a very dodgy position.

Otherwise bung a passing person no more than £100 and make sure you inspect finished job/clear up before parting with any cash.
