Well I find it amusing that in 2008/2009 they were praising diesel cars, encouraging people to buy them, but now they're spawn of satan......
I wonder if the same will happen with electric cars in 10 years time.

My Leaf gets a solid 130 even in the winter rain.

That is excellent. Do you have to drive like a vicar on valium to attain this, and does it include having the heating on?

Bit of heating and heated steering wheel. Pre-heating helps. Never have to scrape ice off the windows.

The car is rated for 150, I get 130 driving normally.

And is this the 30kw/hr Leaf, or the 24kw/hr?

30kWh. Just upgraded from the 24 actually.

It's a great car. Great fun to drive, quiet and refined, cheap to own, and charging is just so convenient. Plug in at home, fully charged every day. When I'm out it charges while I'm doing the shopping, almost always for free.

And of course, no harmful emissions. My electricity is 100% renewable.

Wow, that makes a lot of sense. Increased parking charge for diesel cars which wont actually prevent diesels from running up and down the area itself. If anything it'll add to pollution because drivers will now have to search around the area for cheaper parking. ;)

Anything is possible, but an infinitely more likely scenario is that drivers will steadily move away from diesels.

If local councils really want to reduce pollution then hit the biggest culprits in cities - public transport and delivery vehicles.

Yeah, like that's gonna happen! ;)

One bonus of nuclear is that the physical size of the waste product is relatively small
But the radioactive contamination lasts for hundreds of thousands of years. Nobody wants it in their back yard so where would you put it? Although unlikely, there is still the possibility of naughty people stealing some to cause havoc. I would rather have no possibility of radioactive contamination at all.

Solar and even wind power are just pointless in the UK, we simply don't get strong enough sunlight or wind to make them viable on most of the main land.
Incorrect. The problem is storing the excesses that are made when the sun is shining and/or wind blowing. And there is quite a bit of research going on to remedy this. There is a scheme connecting battery electric cars to the national grid being trialled now.

If you want to be “green” (which I do) the best thing you can do is keep your old car whatever it is.

One of the guaranteed renewable companies or of your own generation?

I am pleased with the results of our 4kW solar system and want some form of battery storage now. I will be buying a battery electric vehicle later in the year when I've got the cash. If the Leaf replacement isn't out by then it will be a 30 kWh Leaf. I am hoping that the C2G trial will still be on when I get it.

Who you buy your electricity from does not affect the generation split.
Who you buy your electricity from does not affect what electricity comes down the line to you.
Who you buy your electricity from ONLY affects the price you pay and the customer service you get.
  • got an electric car last year- love it- BMW i3 Rex. Im an early adopter of new tech and this suits me well. Small runaround, very nippy and fun. My mileage is low so range isnt an issue and compared to my 10 year old 3 litre merc it costs pennies to fuel.

If I had my time again Id lease rather than buy due to depreciation and the tech advancing- but I bought it though my own company which gives a corporation tax saving in the first year then I can sell it as a depreciated assess and write that off (thats my understanding anyway).

I was looking at solar but Brexit destroyed by solar PV / Tesla budget virtually overnight.

Oh dear, another one who doesn't understand how an electricity grid works.

So tell me, if everyone refused to pay any coal plant for the energy it produced, do you think it would carry on generating electricity and contributing to the energy mix? Do you think investors would pump money into more coal fired plants?
