Quick query about making my own Christmas Cake

If it was syrup it would say so rather than saying treacle!0

Black treacle. I sometimes add in some black treacle to my fruit cake if I've substituted in light for dark brown sugar. Most sugar is pretty much interchangable in cakes as far as the recipe "working" goes so golden syrup would work, but wouldn't be as rich and dark.0

Hi,yes black treacle,as it helps to give the cake its nice dark colour.Mmmmm, specially when you 'feed' the cake with a teaspoonful of rum or brandy every now and then up to the big day:heartsmil 'A woman is like a teabag: You never know her strength until you drop her in hot water'. Black treacle is also great in bread pudding and brings it up to luxury level. I put it in to use the last of the tin one day and have done it ever since. My DH has orders to take it to work for his colleagues when I make it. A very large one goes in one fell swoop.0

Thanks all - I thought it would be black treacle. I remember calling golden syrup 'treacle' as a kid so wanted to double check.
Would be devastated if my first attempt failed! Now proud Mumto3 :j0 -
Good Luck with the cake! Hope it turns out brilliantly!0

I ALWAYS use rum.Loving the sunny days!0

I also always use rum. The Christmas Cake recipe I make is from the WI Christmas Cookbook which has some lovely recipes in. It is a lighter fruit cake with apricots, sultanas, multicolured glace cherries, glace pineapple, etc, in it instead of treacle, raisins & the dark fruit. The night before, you put all the fruit in a big bowl and soak it overnight in bacardi (I use Co-op own brand white rum). Then the next day when you make the cake, you tip it all in & it smells gorgeous. I always make this recipe now. Even small nephews & husband (who doesn't like dark fruitcakes) scoff it down. The rum gives it a good flavour & the soaking makes it a nice moist cake.....so go for it!2025's challenges: 1) To fill our 10 Savings Pots to their healthiest level ever

I've found a nice sounding recipe in a magazine and thought I'd try making my own Xmas cake for the first time.
(My mum makes a fantastic one, so never really had the need).
It says 2 tbsp treacle - would this be black treacle or golden syrup?
thanks
Hi Mumto2,
As your thread has dropped down the Old Style board I've added it to the main thread on Christmas cake queries as your question may help others.
