So where do those big things that look like aircraft that you can see and HEAR going over Ealing and Hanwell come from?

I live in Ealing (Acton). Within one of the noise zones, but not directly under the middle of it. In practice when take-off is Easterly the planes go a bit North West of us. The only ones we hear are the big A380 types, which are noisier and also lower when they come by us, as they climb more slowly.

However, we are further away from LHR than Hanwell, and these planes are noticeable (after living here for 4 yrs) to us. Partly because it isn't a daily thing to get used to - when we suddenly have Easterly take-offs, especially in the Summer, when we have all the windows wide open, the big planes are suddenly very noticeable.

I grew up in the flight path to a RAF base that operated Hercules, and they never bothered me - but I think Hanwell would. Your mileage may vary, OP. I sleep with the window open, all year round - even at the moment! So I would find living closer to LHR an issue. (We're just moving to Alperton, slightly further away from the flightpath....I'm hoping it will be a little quieter, but not banking on it!)

  • Look, flight path guff apart, if you live in SW London you WILL get the brunt of Heathrow air traffic. And it'll vary depending on which way they send them in/out per day.

It never bothered me but i love planes. But even for me i think parts of Hounslow would stretch it!
