Hanwell aircraft noise pollution

Good morning,

Just wanted to get people's opinions on whether they suffer with aircraft noise pollution in the hanwell Ealing area?
Looking to buy in this area,

Thanks

  • My first flat was in Ealing, right under the landing approach for Heathrow (c. 2010)

You obviously have large, low level jets coming in all day (approx 0600-2400), and you notice these for all of about 1 hour until you become habituated and stop hearing them.

Have you not even briefly visited the area? I know it might come as a surprise, but there is a rather large airport nearby which is likely to be expanding in the future - if you google for "Heathrow", you might find some details. There's also a smaller military/VIP airfield even nearer - Northolt.

I lived a bit south of Hanwell for a year and, quite frankly, if you are looking peace and quiet - look somewhere else. While you will "get used" to the constant air traffic, you will constantly remember the annoyance of shutting the windows in the middle of summer just to reduce the noise a bit. Especially when you are trying to make a phone call, and all you, and they, can hear is the airplane engines.
Heck, depending on whether you will be on the west or east part, you may also get house shaking from the low flying ones. That is always fun to "get used to".
  • Well it's certainly not going to get any better...
  • Depends what you're used to. I lived in Ealing then West ealing then Hanwell and found it slightly less in Hanwell. Have to pause when on phone as can't hear for example but I was very used to planes. Live nowhere near planes now and eerily quiet. Hanwell's nice enough. Good schools.
  • Thank you all for your insights, very good reading!
I have of course been to the area, when I have researched aircraft noise in Hanwell, it doesn't really come up with any potential issues but just the other day I did see and hear 6 large aircraft over the house we are looking at.
Just fear it's only going to get worse.

    What makes you think that...?

Well, your place is north of where I lived, and this is where I saw airplanes fly low by. So what my experience was, and it was constant interruption by noise, yours will be a lot worse. If you can afford a better spot, I strongly recommend that, unless you are at home only at night.

What you could do is for example rent a b&b for day or two in the close vicinity, see how life is in practice.

    or if you are me,

you are still being woken up at 5:30 by them 7 years later and decided that it's is time to move (pity, it was otherwise the best property that I ever owned)

(Oh how it annoys me how people say "you will get used to it" like it's an immutable fact - it isn't)

North of the M4 and I don't think you can distinguish planes that much from the rest of the background noise - I grew up in Acton and never really noticed them - except for Concorde which made a awe-inspiring racket, but only once a day.

Furthermore, noise will be dependent on whether Heathrow is on westerly or easterly operations, and the runways in use for arrivals and departures - see here and here and don't forget that a northerly wind will blow the noise away from Hanwell (so to speak), whilst a southerly wind will have the opposite effect.

As for whether things will get better or worse, well, the government has given the go-ahead for a 3rd runway, so that obviously means more aircraft movements. However, aircraft are getting quieter, so may have less of an impact than they did previously. How disruptive you find aircraft depends on you - no-one can answer for you. However, with so many environmental factors affecting the noise and perception of noise, you're best off spending as much time as you can in the area to get experience of it firsthand over as many days as you can, rather than just the odd visit and anecdotes on the internet...
