This thread is hilarious has the OP checked their groceries to ensure it is made in Britain from British products. Do they change over the channel when non British content appears on their TV. Indeed is their TV a UK brand with fully UK components.......

But banks are different because switching to a putative "British only" bank would probably not cost them anything, but paying British workers rather than Chinese ones to build their telly would cost them more and that wouldn't do!

Hilariously I remember seeing a survey taken in the US where some 80% of people wanted Apple to produce iPhones in the US, but the same proportion of people would not pay any extra to ensure that this actually happened. OP sounds the same - all about supporting British industry, until it turns out it costs them a bit more.

    Hi all

And by that I mean wholly British not just based in the UK.

I'm furious at my bank HSBC for saying they are going to relocate 1000 staff to Paris, so I'm looking for a 100% British bank to more to.

Thinking about Nationwide. ... Are there any others that are 100% British owned?

    Regards

I think it's curious that some people think that supporting British institution hilarious. What's wrong with supporting our own institutions and our own products? Well, you know some people would sell off our great country at the drop of a proverbial hat!

Anyway, it's very difficult to find anything which is !00% British owned: All of the shareholders and all of the members of mutual societies would have to be 100% British in order for the institution itself to be 100% British. I know several people from Poland, Serbia and Czech Republic who are for example, members of Nationwide!

The hilarious thing is that the OP was perfectly happy with HSBC until they read the news hysteria. HSBC will be pretty much as British as it always has been.

Why wasn't this an issue before? Why starting jumping up and down about it now? I'm sure they'll also be selling their BMW and buying... umm...

Well Apple could still make plenty of profit paying us wage levels, they just choose not to.

And is making a decision based on incorrect knowledge and understanding. For example, the lack of passporting, if it happens, will affect certain trades within the EU but it is at investment bank level and not retail bank level.

To be fair, I will be changing my BMW this year and I will not be buying another one. That is partly on the back of the anti UK rhetoric. Although that is softening now and come August when I make the decision, I may change my mind.

If you are referring to HSBC moving out of the U.K. I don't see the hysteria. HSBC warned that if Brexit happened they would move out of the U.K. Now since Auntie May's speech they say they are going to do it. If they do it they cannot claim to be a U.K. bank. It's just as simple as that! But who cares? Everyone thinks the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation is Chinese anyway! Looking back into its history, HSBC was never wholly British: It saw both UK and Hong Kong as its home markets!

In an atmosphere of Brexit any bank which is moving out of the UK and establishing itself in the EU is bound to lose UK customers!

Now since Auntie May's speech they say they are going to do it.

They havent said they are going to. Only that they are making contingency plans. Since the Prime Ministers speech, Michel Barnier and a number of German ministers have suggested that financial services may still continue from London. They have to plan for the worst but hope for the best.
If they do it they cannot claim to be a U.K. bank.

yes they can as they are headquartered in the UK and that will remain the case. Handling EU transactions within the EU does not make it any less a British bank.
veryone thinks the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation is Chinese anyway!

The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation ceased to exist a couple of decades ago.

The The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation still exists. It is based (as it always has been) in Honk Kong, and therefore qualifies as 'Chinese'. It is a subsidiary of HSBC Holdings plc.
