Argos returns policy is a con - just sue them in County Court for a refund

they've been asked repeatedly what the issue was and side-stepped it every time. Read into that what you will.
My take on that is that the laptops aren't actually faulty, but the OP tried to take them back under the 30 day money back guarantee and failed as laptops are (or were back in my Argos days) excluded.
Note how the OP refers to the "return policy which is extended during the Christmas period". This is not applied to faulty goods. This is what you would use to return an item that you have changed your mind about.
Also note that he was told "you've used them, so we cant take them back". I really find it hard to believe that anyone who works in retail would utter that line in response to a customer bringing back a faulty item.
It's my opinion that when the OP failed to return the laptops under the 30 day money back guarantee he then tried to claim they were faulty and the manager clearly saw straight through him/her!
That is just my opinion, not saying I'm right, but I think the lack of an answer to the question "what is the fault?" says it all!! Been smoke free for 4 years!! :beer:0 -
Fits perfectly with his aggressive attitude here and his heavy handed approach with Argos, going to court at the first opportunity.0

For anyone genuinely having a problem with Argos, this chap had an unusual approach to a solution:
"Revenge is a dish best served cold! Funeral director uses hearse to return 'dead' fridge after long dispute with Argos
A funeral director used his hearse to return a 'dead' fridge freezer to Argos
Rafael Learmonth and three colleagues wheeled it into the Maidstone store
He was acting on behalf of his elderly mother who has had four faulty fridges
Since the protest his mother has received a £100 Argos voucher and flowers"

LinYou can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.0 -
There's a lot of back and forth here but ultimately what was wrong with the 2 laptops? Why did they get classed as faulty?
Was it a case of you bought cheap, didn't understand computer specs and it wasn't powerful enough for what you need it for (ie. gaming)?
If Manager said no, why didn't you complain to CEO? CEO's normally please customers and you have have had more success there.
Am I right in thinking you still have the use of 2 laptops plus wanting money off them?
WOW! loads of assumptions there.they've been asked repeatedly what the issue was and side-stepped it every time. Read into that what you will.
I must have missed that.0 -
Forgot to update, Argos did pay up within days of the default county court judgment.
It would seem the reason they didnt reply to the Claim Form is they had sent me a settlement letter that had crossed in the post.
First they offered a cheque and when I refused they did a same day bank transfer for the full amount including court fees and interest.
Repeat my original point, dont be fobbed by these companies however big they are. If you believe you are right, pursue them in the county court.0 -
Yet another example of how issuing county court proceedings is by far the most effective way for a consumer to make their voice heard.
It sounds like the Op had a pretty weak claim, yet he has still got an excellent result - and very quickly.
From my recollection of browsing this forum, this seems to be result nearly every time a consumer is prepared to issue court proceedings.
People would get much better results if they were more willing to sue rather than having their time wasted and getting fobbed off by big companies.
If you aren't prepared to issue court proceedings then you should be prepared to be ignored and to get walked all over - it doesn't matter what the law says if you aren't prepared to go to court to enforce it.0 -
So do you still have the laptops? And what was the actual fault?0

The date of the posts was throwing me until I noticed that it was 30th Jan 2017!!
Happy that you've posted the outcome, but couldn't you have done it a bit sooner? Or at the very least not around the same day+month!!0 -

The reality is that companies will tend to settle small value claims rather than defend. It costs too much for them to defend therefore they use a cost/benefit analysis that shows when to defend and when to capitulate ... regardless of the strength (or otherwise) of the claimant's case.
In this case you won ... it doesn't mean you would have if they had opted to defend.0 -

Is there?
I can't see a single one. Questions yes, assumptions no.Why were the laptops classed as faulty?
Were they cheap? And you didn't understand what you were buying?
Why didn't you complain to the CEO?
