John Lewis misleading advertising

A few days ago, I saw a dishwasher on special offer at John Lewis until the 22nd of January. I went online to order it the following day. But it said 'out of stock', and I couldn't order it. So, I called the local store to ask if i could order it there if I went in as the offer was still showing as available even if there were no machines actually in stock and was told I couldn't. I was also told that the manufacturer, Bosch, had probably withdrawn the offer as it had been taken up so well and I should call Bosch! I then called customer services, and I was told that in fact JL only bought a limited number of machines in at the offer price.
I emailed JL to say I felt the promotion should have made it clear that the offer only actually lasted while stocks lasted, that there was limited availability. I would have ordered the minute I saw the promotion if it had said that instead of waiting on the assumption I had several days to order. 'Until the 22nd' should mean until the 22nd unless it also says 'while stocks last' or 'limited availability'.
I have just received a reply from JL customer services saying that there were only 225 of the dishwashers at the offer price, and they've gone so the offer is no longer available but I can buy one at full price from the 23rd if I like. No response whatsoever to the part of my email about misleading advertising. And they have now removed the promotion from their website.
So, misleading advertising, confusing communication with JL staff, and a poor response from customer services, who basically ignored my complaint re misleading advertising.
I don't suppose I have a leg to stand on legally? Very disappointed that JL don't honour their promotions or acknowledge when they may have got it wrong. Time to stop shopping at JL because of their good customer service. It ain't what it used to be.

Maybe they've removed it because they've run out of stock. You'll never know if another store had any at the time.
You've not out of pocket so there's no issue.0 -
I don't see what your point is. In any sale, anywhere things are only on sale till the items have sold out.
Common sense.
Go into a shop, see a row of 12 dresses in a sale. If you want a dress buy it now, chances are that in 3 days time they will be sold out. You don't really need a sign up to say that there are no more in the sale.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
This wasn't a sale! It was a promotion until a specified date. If the sign says till the 22nd, it should be till the 22nd.
They didn't remove the ad when it went out of stock. The promotion remained on the website despite it not being available until I emailed with a complaint.
Looks like JL have a few staff on this site!0 -

I'll bet it was while stocks last and up to the 22nd.0 -

When posters come out with ridiculous comments such as that one simply because other people don't write what they want to read, their credibility hits the floor.Bellabella wrote: »Looks like JL have a few staff on this site!0 -
So are you suggesting that every retailer should keep an infinite stock of every items that is on sale or in a promotion?Bellabella wrote: »This wasn't a sale! It was a promotion until a specified date. If the sign says till the 22nd, it should be till the 22nd.0 -
What's the difference between a sale and a promotional offer??
Seriously, someone at JL thought 'we can afford to sell 225 of these at a reduced price' not 'we can afford to sell as many of these until the 22nd'
You can't just make stuff up because you took too long.
You snooze, you lose.0 -
I am suggesting that they should make it clear that they only have a limited number at that price and that the offer ends when they run out and not at the specified date as they clearly indicated on the promotion for the dishwasher.
There aren't any JL staff on this site then????0 -
Why?.Bellabella wrote: »Then their promotion advertisement should have made that clear!
Common sense should have made it clear.0
