  • Yeeeeeha...Firstly massive thank you to all replies.

Deal done. Hard haggle took 2hrs.

63 plate car very decently priced car bought...

Paid £100 on list price of £17.5 k but will come with 4 brand new reworked alloyys and 4 brand new Michelin tyres.

Garage will offer 2 years servicing extended for £200 and 0% Apr loan for 2 years provided I put down 50% as deposit. So the reminder will be sitting in high interest savings account until deal ends and will be paid in full.

Just sharing my experience so that other MSE savers never buy anything without haggling. My wife said she was embarrassed about me haggling...I can't give monekys on what salesmen think about me as I have no intention to date his daughter.

The bit highlighted is done through Volvo, so isnt costing the garage anything.

Getting 4 new tyres and the alloys refurbed is worth a good amount

There really is rarely £,£££s or even £££s to be negotiated off a price anyway these days so if its a good car and a good spec and they're putting decent tyres on not ditchfinders then all sounds good!

Lovely car BTW. I have a newfound soft spot for Volvos.

Its not that they wont accept them, its that they wont accept them without charging you a fee.

It costs them money to process the transaction.

I'd say it's rare for dealers no to accept them for a deposit. There are obviously charges but I've put deposit on credit card for my last couple of cars without a problem, generally around £500. Balance by debit card, thought this was fairly standard.

The new interchange fees on both debit and credit cards might be changing this, might mean many dealers will try for bank transfer which would be worse for the customer.

    Correct.

The larger the amount, the greater the chance they will ask you to pay their charges. £100-£500 they're not likely to, particularly if its a deposit and gets the deal over the line for them.

Looks like a lot of upgrades in 2013 model, reading through there.

Are the wheels 20''? That would indicate reason for alloy refurb, more so than smaller rims. Plus you'll have more expensive tyre replacment costs, when the new ones wear out.

I hired a 63 plate R design D5 XC60 a few years ago for a few weeks. Was a lovely car to drive. Hired a Hyundai Sante Fe for a few weeks year before last, a 15 plate. Was comfortable but called for oil - and took a full litre before 14k. Was handing car back next day so got a refund for the oil when I reported the issue.
  • Really confused. This is getting murkier. Feel like I should walk away.

I called insurance company to get a quote for this car. The agent dropped a bombshell and asked me whether I was involved in 15k fault claim made against the vehicle registered in the claim.

The dealer said, car is absolutely clean and checked under Selekt programme. So not Insurance write off.

Surely for claim of 15k to be made against driver in this car, the car would have had been in a significant incident or there can be other reasons.

What do I do guys. I am getting really nervous about the situation. It is hard earned 17.5k we are spending. We have a baby due in 3 months time, can do without this hassle.

The vehicle is sold under Volvo Selekt scheme.

    Do an hpi check yourself?

Ask for dealer feedback on the owners club website.

There is a chance that the car could have been involved in an expensive claim but not suffered much actual damage... third party injury for instance.

Personally, I wouldn't risk it as I'd always have a niggle at the back of my mind.

There'll be other cars along that fit the bill - have you done a search on the Volvo UK site?

As with any used car it's got a history. I would definitely do a full proper HPI check, if this is clear then no worries. Also ask the garage about it.
Claim for 15k could be from a number of things, for instance the previous owner could have pulled out in front of someone who swerved and hit a tree, no damage to the car you are buying but still a fault claim.
