Ruby's Bought a House, Now I want to Own It!

I have no idea where time is going at the moment - all I know is it's going too fast.
That award ceremony I went to at the start of the month...I only went and won 🤯😳🤣🤣🤣🥳🥳🥳 I have a trophy and everything 😆 and every day someone new finds out and I have to relive the sheer embarrassment all over again! Still it's nice to be recognised for doing a good job, although I would like to just go and crawl under a rock now please!
On the house front well...buyers decided they wanted a survey after all, had it booked in for last Thursday, we were out all day, came home to cupboard doors being left open so thought all was good when we didn't receive a slew of enquiries. Then yesterday we're sitting here working away and can hear someone opening our front door and starting to walk around - which was the actual surveyor. Agents admitted they told us the wrong date but couldn't explain what had happened the previous week because I sure as hell didn't leave the cupboards to our boiler and metres open, or the loft hatch either. So now we wait again to see if anything cropped up that's going to make it all fall apart or if they want a reduction.
We already received the contract to sign for our sale which we're getting witnessed tomorrow and can then return early next week. Pack for our purchase came through today and has generated a number of other enquiries that we need to send back and also more money we need to pay out e.g. electrical and boiler testing because no one has any idea when it was all last checked, neither do they want to show willing and arrange a boiler service themselves 🙄.
Starting to think this new house is going to be a bit of money pit but hey ho we'll soldier on in the meantime 😆Emergency Fund - £8572.39 / £10,000 :: Mortgage OP 2025 - £LISA 24/25 - £3200 / £4000 :: NSD 2025 - 2 / 150 :: Books Read: 1 / 52 :: Decluttering - 4 / 1000Engaged 9th December 2010 :: Married 29th October 2015 :: Bought a House 13th January 20175 -

Well new month, new goals.
We're on track to possibly move by the end of July - survey was fine on this place and all that's left is to exchange contracts. On the purchase side of things we're waiting on the local search and then results of gas and electrical inspections but that should all be bottomed out this week. Also we've had some quotes for new life insurance and yes I know we're adding quite a bit to the mortgage but I'm definitely not tripling the debt so why should my monthly payments for my insurance triple 😳🤯😒
So that means it's now time to knuckle down and get our things in order so we're in the best place possible. Currently I'm putting away the "shortfall" that I've estimated between what our outgoings are now and what they might be in the new house but I also want a little bit of a buffer each month just in case.
Therefore we're going to focus on:
- No Spend Days
- Eating through the freezer (which we kind of have to do) and cupboards
- Being more frugal in general
- Review bills and see where we can cut things down e.g. internet and phones
I seem to do better with these things when I have some accountability so will try and post here most days to keep track of where we are.
Today isn't going to be a NSD as we have to pop to the big blue and yellow Swedish shop to pick up some storage boxes for stuff we want to go in the loft in the new house, but we are also picking up some free moving boxes from a local company on the way there so hoping that balances things out in the universe 😆

I frequently see people on local Facebook groups requesting boxes for moving, as well as people offering them (we've offered particularly large boxes in the past, assuming Mr VH doesn't get to recycling them before I list them XD), and you and Mr Ruby can ask around your respective workplaces, plenty of people are happy to give away a cardboard box so it gets a 2nd use before recycling."You won't bloom until you're planted" - Graffiti spotted in Newcastle.

We've got our boxes from Mr T so far. They send DP out with a cage of boxes last time I sent him in 🤣 I do need some better sized ones though for odd shaped bits. But if you want good strong boxes go ask for the banana boxes on the fruit aisle 😊MORTGAGE BALANCE when we moved Aug 2024, £120,000. January 1st £118,267.06. congrats on the award! Woohoo! I was recently nominated for 2 but didn’t win either
all looks good on the home frontDON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

Well the local company came through with loads of really good, strong boxes, perfect for moving. They're a lift maintenance company and said we're welcome to just pop in whenever as they always have large boxes to give away. Managed to fit 6 in the car and will get them filled this evening and then probably pop back tomorrow. Trip to the Swedish shop was a success too and even managed to pick up a new exercise mat in the sale. Wasn't a planned purchase right this minute but a much needed one and an absolute bargain.
Today is also not going to be a NSD as having my hair cut which has been budgeted for and will also need to pick up a new shampoo bar while I'm in town as current one has probably one more use in it before it starts crumbling - I like to buy a new one before that happens and just mash the old one into the new one so I don't waste any. But other than that I will resist the temptation of being in town!
