Removing an old bank account from credit report

Well I got my ex partner to call Santander to see if my name is still on the bank account and it isn't. She explained the situation regarding Equifax and asked if they could put a note on the account so that I could speak to them about it but they wouldn't. They told her that I needed to go in to a branch.

I went in to a branch yesterday and they basically told me that it was the responsibility of Equifax to get the account off of my credit report. I explained to them that they had already contacted Santander and they wanted me to call them about it.They said that there was nothing that they could do about it and that I needed to contact Equifax.

So I'm going round in circles.....

What sort of effect would a joint bank account with a £1350 overdraft limit have on a mortgage application?? The account £1296 overdrawn according to my credit report.

When do you want to put a mortgage application in? I would bet on it coming off in the next 4 weeks. It's all good Santander saying it's up to Equifax to sort it but if Santander have not sent them the information (which they probably have not) it won't get updated until they do. I would be surprised if it's still there 3 months after the last update date.

Is it all Credit Reference Agencies or just the one?

The issue seems to be whether Santander are supplying the correct information to the credit reference agencies.

You might try using the Data Protection Act. Those who keep personal data have a legal responsibility to make sure it is up to date and accurate. If Santander is supplying the same information to the Agency as it is placing on your online records then the Agency is not maintaining an up to date record. If so inform the Information Commissioner.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

I think this is probably the case. Similar thing happened to me. I phoned experian and they told me I had not been included in the list that is sent to them from the bank for the previous 2 months. It's quite common for banks to remove people from the list they send when an account is closed without updating the CRA's so I'm told. This is picked up somehow and corrected but only happens quarterly.
  • I seem to be going round in circles with this.

Can somebody just confirm whether I understand this correctly. My understanding was.....

Once my name was off the Santander account that it would disappear from my credit report or at least show as settled in my part and not show the £1296 as my debt.

After going back & forth to equifax, a Santander branch & Santander complaints department I have just been told by them that yes my name is definitely off the account but it will stay on my credit report, as would the debt as it was a joint account and they could not remove it.

Surely that can't be right as the debt has nothing to do with me and when we signed the forms my ex partner was told that she would be liable for the debt on her own. Am I missing something here??

Have you checked your Experian and Call Credit files too to see what they show? Have you checked ClearScore too? (the free version of Equifax)

Does the bank account show in your closed accounts or is it still showing as a closed account?

Does your ex appear as a financial association in your files?

What's the actual date of the last update from Santander?

Have you actually put the mortgage application in, or are you just checking your files before making the application?

Yes, it shows on the other credit files too.

It shows as an active account being £1296 overdrawn.

Yes, my ex shows as a financial associate, but she will as my name is on a joint mortgage with her also.

The last update from Santander was in November and I think it was actually the same date that we signed the forms for my name to be removed from the account.

No, I am waiting for this to be updated on my credit report before my financial advisor puts an application in.

In that case, I don't think 1 bank account with a small overdraft will make much difference if you have a joint mortgage with her still.

Is it worth waiting say the date of the last update to see what happens? e.g say the last update was 28th Nov, to wait until 28th Jan and see if they have updated the records then?

That's what I was thinking but I don't know how it all works. If my name doesn't appear on their system anymore (which it doesn't) then an update may not get sent to my report.

I'd imagine you'd have to remove all financial links, with your ex, to get her removed from your credit file.

  • Just a quick update.....

After being told on Tuesday by Santander that the account and overdraft debt has to remain on my credit file I was surprised to see that after requesting a new credit report today that the account now shows as settled with a balance of zero!!
