Removing an old bank account from credit report

Good Evening,

Last year I got my credit report to check it over in preparation for applying for a mortgage.

There was a Santander bank account showing on it that I had with an ex partner that I split up with 9 years ago & to cut a long story short in November last year we both went in to the local Santander branch and signed the necessary forms to have my name removed from the account. This was done and the Santander man in the branch said that my name would be removed from the account immediately but it could take a month or so for it to disappear from my credit report.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the account was still on my credit report so I emailed Equifax, who said they would query it with Santander. I got a reply from Equifax today saying that at this moment in time it cannot be removed from my credit report and Santander gave them a number for me to call them on to discuss the matter. I phoned Santander today to discuss the matter, however they would not talk to me about it as my name isn't linked to the account.

Any ideas of how I can get this bank account off of my credit report??

Thanks

Daniel

If the account was still open over that time and you were only removed in November it will remain on your report for 6 years from November. You will be able to remove the finacial association to your ex partner however.
  • Surely it shouldn't have me liable for the overdraft though as my name is no longer on the account??

What is making you think you are liable for the overdraft?

On the credit agreements section of my credit report it says the amount of debt that I have and it equals the amount of my credit card debt plus the £1300 overdraft on the that bank account.

Ok it depends what you signed really I guess. Was the account in overdraft when you were removed? I assume you can still see the joint account on your file. What's the status of the account? Up to date? Settled?

Yes the account was in overdraft when I was removed (I gave my ex partner half the amount of the overdraft after signing the forms). The man in the bank asked my ex partner if she was aware that she would be solely responsible for the overdraft once the forms were signed and she said she was.

When my ex partner logs on to her internet banking the account shows only in her name only and my internet bank details for that account now longer work so my name must have been removed.

On my credit file the account shows as it did last year - open and the overdraft amount is included in my total debt!!

I assume that account on your report has been updated since November? It should show the last updated date.

I would have another go on the phone. Try to be a bit more persistent that you want this resolved. Not sure what number they gave you but may be worth trying the complaints team.

The last update date was actually the same date that the forms were signed, which was 2 months ago.

The number that they gave me was the complaints team but they refused to discuss the matter at all but yes I will have to try them again.

OK that's a good thing in a way. It just means Santander have not sent updated info to he CRA's so what your seeing is technically way out of date. Getting them to update the CRA is what you need to do. I have previously been told by my bank a closed account can take 3 months to update. I made a bg fuss and they updated it the next day.
  • Well I got my ex partner to call Santander to see if my name is still on the bank account and it isn't. She explained the situation regarding Equifax and asked if they could put a note on the account so that I could speak to them about it but they wouldn't. They told her that I needed to go in to a branch.

I went in to a branch yesterday and they basically told me that it was the responsibility of Equifax to get the account off of my credit report. I explained to them that they had already contacted Santander and they wanted me to call them about it.They said that there was nothing that they could do about it and that I needed to contact Equifax.

So I'm going round in circles.....

What sort of effect would a joint bank account with a £1350 overdraft limit have on a mortgage application?? The account £1296 overdrawn according to my credit report.
