I hope this is the right place to post - apologies if not!

My Mum has a really, really old Siemens phone, (we're talking 6years or more!) and has replaced the battery a few years ago, but it's really seen better days.

She's after a replacement phone, as a pensioner she's not bothered about texting, music, photos or anything fancy - just to use in an emergency for calls only. I have a Nokia 3120i (I think - it's got the orange bit round the side, blue cover) that she could manage quite well - but I've used it on the O2 network and Mum is on T-Mobile PAYG. Does the phone need to be unlocked from the O2 network (it's not been used for a couple of years now) so that I can put her SIM card in and use it?

Sincere apologies if this is a totally numpty question - I know nothing about the technicalities of mobile phones - and if it is I hope I've made you smile at my stupidity!
