6kg hold luggage allowance

I just booked a flight with thomas cook, not realising (I need to learn to read small print) the hand luggage allowance is only 6kg where most airlines have at least 10kg.

The dimensions of the cabin luggage for thomas cook are the same as they are for airlines with 10kg allowance, those dimensions being 55cm x 40cm x 20cm.

My bag fits the dimensions criteria but fully packed is just under 10kg.

Has anyone flown with thomas cook recently? Do they weigh all hand luggage?

I've frequently seen people try and take oversized bags on as hold luggage and they just get them put in the hold for free so before I pay for hold luggage I thought I'd see if anyone has any experience in this regard.

Weve just been to lanzarote with Thomas cook. They didn't weigh the hand luggage on way out but they did weigh it on the way back.
  • It's a hit or miss with Thomas Crook. I've had mine weighed, overwight, walked away and gone to another checkin desk, sailed through
    travelover
  • The rules apply to everyone. If you can't stay within them then pay to check a bag.
It's irrelevant what other peoples experiences are because they may not be yours. Saying you were told on MSE that they haven't weighed other peoples bags won't help.

This is like will there be a ticket inspector or a traffic warden around ...

Perhaps, you could find the cost to pay for a hold bag now and if caught, calculate the odds and decide if "you feel lucky" as Clint Eastwood put it OR if you don't want to sweat then cough up for peace of mind.
I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.

As Leylandsunaddict says, it doesn't matter what experiences other people have had.

If you're the one person they choose to weigh hand luggage, are you going to say 'well, the people on MSE told me they'd never had their hand luggage weighed'?

FTR, TC have weighed our hand luggage, going out from LGW and MAN.

If they do weigh it, it will turn out to be an expensive decision to chance it.

If you really want to avoid confusion you should amend the thread title too.

Can't you reduce the weight of your luggage? Use a lighter bag, buy toiletries at your destination, cram heavy stuff into your pockets?

I was once 2kg over the hold allowance I'd purchased, my coat pockets had tears in the lining and I managed to fit enough inside to get me within the limit. I was finding stuff I'd forgotten about for months afterwards...
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
  • Thomson Airways only allow 5Kg hand luggage, unless you have Premium seats or are on a fly/cruise holiday.
