Moving home is one of the most stressful things we do. Moving rental is somewhat easier than buying but it is still costly and time consuming. I've been a tenant asked to move when a long term landlord's plans changed. One day life is plodding along as normal, next day you have to drop everything to house hunt and organise a move. It disrupts your whole life for months. It may sound like clipping three months from a tenancy isn't much but it is when you consider a tenancy may only be six months to a year long in the first place. The longer any one tenancy is the less times a tenant has to move overall.

I found moving when it was a planned move by me much easier as I could get well prepared up front and not make any other plans for that time. This isn't the case when a move is sprung on you out of the blue so asking for compensation so as to be able to pay for professional removers, take time off work etc. seems very reasonable to me. I would certainty price up my time spent, overlapping rents, agent's fees etc expecting the move not to cost me anything plus getting some sweetener for rearranging my life at an unexpected time.

If the landlord thinks moving is no big deal then surely he could take a six month rental and then move into his house after that ... but somehow that's not convenient. So he's not prepared to do what he's asking his tenant to do.

As for HMRC I would certainly do as they instruct. It doesn't meany the landlord will end up paying that much tax, all he has to do is register with HMRC and he can claim any overpaid tax back. As said before if he registers with the NRL scheme then HMRC will write to the tenant letting him know he no longer needs to deduct the tax. This is such an easy thing for the landlord to do so I'm surprised the landlord hasn't just done it to remove the tenant deducting tax complications.

Problem is it is unlikely that LL will want to cut a deal. He probably knows now that he is likely to be sued for non protection of deposit so having to fork more, and since the matter has taken a very personal turn, I would think he would rather pay ten times more to stay at a hotel than give OP a penny more than he has to.

He will rather pay his solicitor in the hope that he is convinced that he can indeed ask OP to leave early (won't go anywhere) or most likely, accept that he has to wait until August. Who know, March, June, August makes no difference, whatever he gives OP won't guarantee that he is gone at the agreed deadline, so frankly, he would be a total fool to agree to any deal considering the escalation of this matter.

Then why did he say 'make me an offer' in his latest email?
  • This is really bad, HMRC messed up big time. Received a letter today from HMRC stating the LL was registered from 2013! However the letter was addressed to someone else (did not recognize surname) and was forwarded from that person's address (it arrived in a white envelope). I have called HMRC and they are sending another letter in my name to confirm no tax is to be deducted.

Once I received the letter in MY NAME! will pay this months rent straight away.

Well it's fine. You have both the original and the amended version, So just pay the rent.

It still makes no difference to your situation

Out of curiosity I looked up the cost of birth in the UAE.

The straightforward birth, alone, costs from approx £1500 to £3000, depending on whether in a government or private hospital (in hospital stays extra) and a caesarean is about £5500, plus the cost of hospital stays.

It's quite cheap compared to what these would cost the NHS.

No it would cost the NHS about the same, the cost just isn't passed on :)
