i hate shoddy landlords as much as the next person. i am dismayed at the rising costs of renting (i pay 50% of my wage just in rent!) with little hope of me ever being on the property ladder and i blame the buy-to-let landlords and those that buy houses and leave them empty. but i do think some people in this thread gave inflammatory commentary that has not solved anything.
you should deduct 20% of the rent from the date HMRC has instructed you to and send it to them with receipt to landlord. do not withhold rent for previous months, HMRC can reclaim this through landlord as they now know that you were not aware. if they decide this is by you sending a full month of rent to them, so be it, but do not do this unless instructed.
OP, you have to leave at some point. this may have bought you an extra 3-4 months but you have ruined any chance of getting a good reference from the LL. they made their offer, you have made yours, so now make a counter offer that is between the two. as long as you find somewhere without incurring extra costs surely it doesn't matter? you have no stability in this property either way as even if they waited until august, they have made it clear they want the property back.
if i were in this position i would say i would like 2 months rent and the moving costs covered (new agency fees, removals) and obviously my deposit back. this gives you a deposit and month's rent for a new place and then another month's rent for compensation. but i would be looking to move out before the end of the tenancy because what's the point dragging it out? you could be nice and settled in a new place by the summer! with potentially a little fund for a holiday!
Agreed and this was suggested on page 1 or 2 (by me)

Moving home isn't a simple request, it is both stressful and time consuming. The LL had a simple route to resolve this, one which appears fair and chose not to take it. Hardly OPs fault.0

Problem is it is unlikely that LL will want to cut a deal. He probably knows now that he is likely to be sued for non protection of deposit so having to fork more, and since the matter has taken a very personal turn, I would think he would rather pay ten times more to stay at a hotel than give OP a penny more than he has to.
He will rather pay his solicitor in the hope that he is convinced that he can indeed ask OP to leave early (won't go anywhere) or most likely, accept that he has to wait until August. Who know, March, June, August makes no difference, whatever he gives OP won't guarantee that he is gone at the agreed deadline, so frankly, he would be a total fool to agree to any deal considering the escalation of this matter.0 -

The advice he is being given is based on his posts being truthful. If they are then his landlord is in the wrong to think he can simply get out of a contract because it suits him to do so. What would be the point in fixed term contracts if you didn't have to abide by them? Moving house is expensive and people can't be expected to do so simply because their landlord is no longer willing to abide by the terms of a contract they signed.
If OP's posts are truthful, then the fact (I haven't checked posting history but taking you as being truthful as well) he has a history of bankruptcy, CCJ's etc is of no consequence. It does not make the actions of the landlord correct or legal.0 -
Dunno why the LL doesn't just pay a grand and be done with it. Surely worth saving the time, effort and money only to be told you're in the wrong anyway. Surely the OP would settle for that...

All we know about you is you are a tw4t called Buster. He could be making everything up, including his history - not sure why you are getting so worked up about it. People give advice on what is written, and that advice could help others - including people who want to be landlords.
There are reasons deposits are protected - the LL didn't
There are tax rules to follow - on the face of it the LL didn't (and this is really just detracting from the thread)
An offer was made to break the contract for fair payment of remaining term - the LL didn't accept this, although it would have likely been lower cost than hassle of themselves renting for 6 months.
The LL is still spouting incorrect process for giving notice, again not the OPs fault.
The OP could have been more flexible maybe, but it can be hard to do that when someone gets your back up.0
