We have a black Sebo X4. If you haven't heard so much about Sebo this link covers it well enough.

Another vote for Sebo from me. Went to John Lewis around 18 years ago to look at a Dyson and they demonstrated both that and a Sebo to us. They emptied a bag of rubbish on the carpet and the Sebo picked up better than the Dyson. We still have it and would buy the brand again. We have had dogs in the past and cats recently, no issue with picking up hair.

We have the Dyson Animal DC41Mk2, which is excellent. Our cats are Ragdolls, which are longhair, and they moult, a lot. Their hair falls off them in big masses as well, and the vacuum has no trouble at all picking it up. Would highly recommend.

Dyson is a "marmite" product. People love 'em or hate 'em. There is no convincing either side to change their opinion. My household Dyson is coming on for 20 years old, I've done a few DIY replacement parts, where on most other machines it would have been a bin-and-replace job. Much less faff to empty than any bagged machine I've ever used and pretty effective as long as you clean the filters every six months or so.

However, I also like my cheapo Wickes wet and dry workshop vacuum which I've also had for many years and has the added benefit of blowing as well as sucking. Ideal for cleaning out the darker recesses of the car.
  • We have four semi-long haired cats and have a Dyson, but I hate it so am pleased to read about the Miele one. I find the Dyson far too heavy and it's so hard to manoeuvre in a small house, even though it's a ball one. Will definitely look into the Miele one, though it might mean I have to vacuum as at the moment I get my husband to do it cos the Dyson wrecks my back!
  • I have two cats, one of which has longish white fur which sheds constantly and creates drifts on the carpet.
We bought the Vax 502 Pet. It's an upright and is pretty powerful. It comes with a special "turbo tool" which attaches to the hose and has a spinning brush on it (kind of a mini version of the main base). It works brilliantly on the upholstery, even the embedded fur which we'd been struggling to pick up before we got this.
The hose isn't very long - just enough to reach the top of the sofa from the front, but this means it's got strong suction.
I don't find I'm emptying it every time we use it either.
We've got a mix of carpet and lino, and despite the faff of having to mess around with the special hard floor attachment to the base, it works brilliantly on both. I'd recommend it.

Also helps that it should be £119 but we got it in the factory sale for £30. I think it was around this time of year...there may be another coming up soon.

We have the Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog and its the best at picking up hairs we have ever had.

The bags, yes they fill up and need changing (not that often) and are not cheap.
However, I spend 5 minutes emptying them by pushing the flap back and pulling the hairs out over the wheely bin. This can double the use.

The thing that I dont like about it is how the had slots into the vac body, this bit of plastic looks very fragile to me and easy enough to break should it get knocked - luckily it has not yet.

I have had 4 Dysons now.
When working properly they are the best vacuums ever for me, but when they fail although I say never again I always seem to get another one.
My latest is the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal bought it when they first came out a year or two back , it does pick up brilliant and although it seems to fill the dust container up quickly its because it is a smaller container than previous Dysons lol,
From new it seemed stiff to lean the vacuum from upright to working position and it used to click. eventually the handle snapped off (it was only around 6 month old) Dyson came out and repaired it no questions asked but the engineer did say he hadn't seen that happen before and it had been a fault from new that had made the stiffness and clicking.
I am happy with the Cinetic it does the job efficiently
Just a word of warning though to anyone owning one. the engineer told me I should not be using carpet fresh the likes of 'Shake n Vac' because it can affect the filters within the 'big ball' I use the discs now that go inside the clear dust canister
  • I know Dyson vacs have a grooming tool which is good for medium and long haired dogs. Hope this helps. :)
